ᐅ Is the KALLAX Shelf Suitable for Long-Term Use in Damp Areas?

Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into whether the KALLAX shelf from IKEA can be used permanently in damp rooms. Specifically, I mean spaces where increased humidity or light moisture occasionally occurs, such as laundry rooms, garages with minor condensation, or semi-open bathroom areas.

The shelf is mainly made of wood-based panels, which are melamine-coated, but I still don’t think the material is designed for permanent exposure to moisture. I’m interested in whether there are any experiences or tips on how to make KALLAX more moisture-resistant or if it’s better to use completely different furniture.

So, is the KALLAX shelf, as sold, suitable for these types of environments? If not, are there practical modifications or alternatives?

I look forward to your informed opinions!

Hey burkard59,

I can only agree with PeoDaniel – clear polyurethane varnish is definitely a top tip! 😊

You really need to be thorough, especially never forget the shelf edges – those are the weak points.

Oh, and one more thing: If you put the shelf on feet instead of directly on the floor, you can better prevent localized moisture from the ground.

A coat of polyurethane clear varnish is a good compromise between effort and protection

A bit of “neighborly care” for your shelf, so even the KALLAX can look good in damp corners 😉

I would also add: Make sure not to place the shelf directly against a cold wall. Condensation can cause increased moisture in that area.

Keeping a small gap between the shelf and the wall provides significant protection.

That’s a great tip, thanks. I plan to set up the shelf in a small laundry room with a basement-like character, which has ventilation but often stays quite cool. I will follow the idea of leaving some distance from the wall and treat the edges with clear lacquer as suggested.

In summary, my takeaway is that the KALLAX shelf, with the right preparations and some caution, can indeed be suitable for such semi-damp areas—provided it is not constantly exposed to moisture and regular checks are performed.

Thank you all for the helpful tips and detailed explanations!
