Francisc579 Dec 2015 19:02Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to buy furniture from the IKEA Platsa series and have a specific question I would like to discuss here: Are there any IKEA Platsa furniture pieces where the doors or drawers come standard with soft-close hinges?
I know that IKEA offers soft-close features in some series, but how is it specifically with Platsa? Are these hinges included, available as accessories, or do you need to rely on third-party products?
I want to avoid having to make any modifications afterwards when getting such a system, as I value quality and comfort.
Looking forward to your experiences and answers!

It’s more of a basic, budget-friendly furniture line where innovation isn’t really the focus.
I suspect the furniture is designed so that soft-close can only be added later through third-party products. IKEA does offer soft-close in some of their other systems—but PLATSA? That comfort feature is missing there.
Maybe IKEA wants to encourage customers to upgrade themselves, or it’s simply a cost calculation. But basically, if you want soft-close, you have to take action yourself; otherwise, it’s not a feature included with PLATSA.
For additional information and a detailed explanation:
IKEA PLATSA furniture is normally delivered with standard hinges and drawer slides that do not feature soft-close. This is also stated in the product description.
The PLATSA kitchen is a separate topic, as soft-close drawers are often mentioned there, but for the freely configurable furniture pieces (shelves, sideboards, etc.), these soft-close components are not directly integrated.
If someone actually wants soft-close, there are two options:
- Buy IKEA soft-close hinges as accessories (e.g., from the Grundtal series or other compatible lines) and install them yourself
- Or use third-party hinges that are compatible and easy to install (you have to pay attention to dimensions and drilling patterns here, as IKEA uses very specific standards).
A tip: Retrofitting can be tricky, especially with PLATSA, because the doors and carcasses have specific drill holes that do not universally fit all hinge systems. However, if you are confident with DIY, you can be satisfied with the right hinges.
I’m curious if you already know exactly which furniture you are planning, and whether it concerns doors or drawers? That would influence the choice of soft-close solution.

I’m also interested in retrofitting options, but I would prefer to buy it right the first time, factory-fitted or at least with hinges offered by IKEA that fit better. Is there any experience with which hinges IKEA provides for retrofitting?
