Hello everyone,

I have a fairly specific question and hope to benefit from your experience: Are there metal hinges designed specifically for doors in the IKEA KALLAX system?

I am referring to sturdy, high-quality door hinges that can be mounted directly on the KALLAX shelving frame without the need for adjustments or improvisation. My main concerns are compatibility with both the material thickness and the design, as well as the load capacity of the hinges, since I am planning to install heavy doors.

Has anyone found suitable products for this or knows whether IKEA itself offers such metal hinges, or if it’s better to rely on third-party suppliers?

I would appreciate any tips, sources, or feedback regarding metal hinges for KALLAX.

I used metal hinges on my own KALLAX shelving system, which I got from a hardware store. The thickness of the doors is important; otherwise, the hinges won’t fit properly.

In short: there are no original IKEA metal hinges, but standard solutions work fine.

I once sourced stainless steel hinges for my KALLAX myself, which are actually intended for kitchen cabinets.

That sounds like a practical approach. Which sizes or models did you use exactly?

Ideally, they should have a load capacity of at least 5 kg (11 lbs) per door, as I plan to install relatively heavy doors.

Also regarding installation: Is there a lot of adjustment needed, or is the hole spacing standardized?

I would appreciate any experience-based advice so I know what to buy.

There are metal hinges available that fit the material thickness of KALLAX doors (approximately 12-15 mm (0.5-0.6 inches)).

When choosing, make sure they are cup hinges with a suitable hole diameter (about 35 mm (1.4 inches)) and designed for mounting on the door surface.

Many DIY enthusiasts recommend furniture hinges from hardware suppliers, as these are often available in stainless steel or galvanized steel and offer sufficient load capacity.

Regarding installation: The hole spacing is not standardized for KALLAX, so you usually need to measure yourself and possibly make slight adjustments, but this is common with furniture fittings.

The load capacity and drill hole positions are important.

Exactly, that is crucial.

Many IKEA KALLAX doors are thinner than standard cabinet doors, which should be considered when installing hinges.

If you are looking for metal hinges, make sure they are specifically designed for doors between 12 and 15 mm (0.5 and 0.6 inches) thick.

Alternatively, you can search for “cup hinges for cabinet doors 12 mm” and then adjust the drill holes accordingly.

Thanks for the tip, I will definitely keep that in mind.

In summary, my impression now is that there are no original IKEA metal hinges for KALLAX, but you can use standard cabinet hinges if you pay attention to the door thickness, drilling dimensions, and load capacity.

If anyone has good sources for these hinges or experience with specific models, I would appreciate any recommendations 🙂
