Hello everyone,

I recently decorated a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA with some stickers to personalize it. Unfortunately, I noticed that the surface became sticky after applying the stickers. It doesn’t just feel slightly tacky, but it also attracts dust and dirt more easily. I made sure the surface was clean and dry before applying the stickers. My question is: has anyone experienced this issue with KALLAX surfaces after sticking decals? Are there any effective solutions to remove the stickiness without damaging the material or its appearance? I would appreciate any tips on how to neutralize or prevent this sticky surface.

Thanks in advance!

The phenomenon of a sticky surface after applying stickers to KALLAX shelves is not uncommon. Generally, the issue is caused by adhesive residue left behind from either the sticker or its protective backing.

To resolve this:

1. Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol (at least 70%) or a specialized adhesive remover. These products effectively dissolve sticky residues without damaging the melamine finish of the KALLAX panels.

2. Use a lint-free cloth for cleaning to avoid scratches.

3. After cleaning with alcohol, briefly wipe the surface with mild dish soap and warm water to remove any remaining cleaning agents.

4. Avoid strong cleaners such as acetone, as they can damage the surface.

If stubborn residues persist, gently rubbing the area again with fine abrasive pads can sometimes help; however, this should be done cautiously, as it may cause the surface to become matte.

In summary, I recommend isopropyl alcohol as the first step.

Interesting question.

I would like to pick up the point from post 2 and add the following:

Basically, the problem often lies with the buildup of adhesive residue

While this is true, in some cases the stickiness can also come from the material itself. KALLAX panels typically consist of melamine-coated chipboard. If plasticizers have been released from the adhesive or certain reactions occur with the surface, the surface can indeed become sticky, even if no visible residue remains.

One solution here would be not only to clean the surface but also to treat it with a suitable protective coating (e.g., furniture wax or clear, thin acrylic protective lacquers) to prevent the chemical reaction.

I am interested to know if anyone has experience with such protective coatings after applying adhesives.

To expand on the previous answers, here is a structured process to eliminate the sticky feeling on the KALLAX after applying stickers:

1. Prepare the surface: Before applying stickers, thoroughly clean the area with a degreasing cleaner (e.g., an all-purpose cleaner) and make sure it is completely dry.

2. Remove adhesive residues: If the surface is already sticky, I recommend first cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol (as described by SUBEN60).

3. Fix remaining residues if needed: If the stickiness cannot be fully wiped away, wiping with a mild household alcohol solution or a specialized adhesive remover for sticker residue that does not leave marks on melamine can help.

4. Aftercare: To protect and prevent renewed stickiness, a very thin layer of furniture wax can be applied. It is best to use a soft cloth and polish the wax according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This creates a protective layer without changing the appearance.

5. Alternative methods: If the surface is severely damaged or extremely sticky, you can carefully use very fine sandpaper (grit ~1000) to remove the top adhesive layer; however, this may alter the level of gloss.

I hope this step-by-step guide helps.

Isopropyl alcohol is effective against adhesive residues, but if the surface remains sticky, you can try applying a thin layer of furniture wax. This often reduces sticky areas quickly. If you don’t have alcohol, denatured alcohol (methylated spirits) works as well.
