Mintunaha725 Feb 2018 09:34Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Malm dresser from Ikea, which is generally great, but unfortunately, one of the drawer fronts is slightly warped. The frame seems to have shifted just a bit, causing a noticeable unevenness on one side of the dresser. The distortion isn’t huge, but it is noticeably bothersome, especially when closing the drawers.
My question is: Is there a way to fix or adjust such a slight warp on a Malm dresser? I’m particularly interested in whether the wood can be restored to its original shape using household methods or specific techniques, without having to rely on the warranty or exchange.
If anyone has experience with Malm or similar furniture, I’d appreciate any tips on how to handle this! How did you deal with it if you’ve had the same issue? Or is a slight warp just typical and difficult to fix?
I’m looking forward to your opinions and advice.

Is there any way to fix or correct a slight distortion in a Malm chest of drawers?Hey, that’s a classic Ikea issue that I think many of us have encountered! 🙂 Often, the cause is moisture or uneven weight distribution. What I usually suggest is to try placing the chest on a completely flat, stable surface and gently open and close the drawer several times to let the wood “settle.”
If a little heat helps, you could try using a damp cloth with an iron set to low heat (be careful, of course!) to slightly relax the wood fibers. But this should be done very cautiously so the wood doesn’t get damaged further.
And very importantly: sometimes just tightening the screws again does the trick. Maybe something isn’t fully secured – that often makes a big difference! Good luck, and don’t worry—small imperfections can usually be managed quite well. 😊

I’m especially interested in whether the wood can be restored to its original shape using household methods or special techniques.Warping in a Malm dresser largely depends on the materials and construction: Malm primarily uses particleboard with a thin veneer coating, which is not solid wood but more like laminate, providing some resistance to deformation.
If the deformation is minor, you should definitely check the following steps:
1. Inspect screws and joints: Loose fittings can cause unevenness.
2. Consider moisture exposure: Particleboard is sensitive to moisture, which can cause swelling and warping.
3. Bending it back into shape is difficult to impossible; the wood is more likely to need “drying out” or reshaping by applying pressure.
A common approach is to place the dresser on a flat surface, remove all drawers completely, and realign the fronts while checking the exact drill holes. Using a tensioning screw or clamp is feasible with solid wood but usually has limited effectiveness here.
For better material understanding: you can try gently treating the dresser with a slightly warmed, damp cloth to relax the fibers a bit. However, be cautious, as too much moisture can damage the material.
Alternatively, consider an exchange, since Ikea furniture is generally mass-produced and inexpensive, making intensive repairs impractical without significant effort.
Can you also share if the dresser was stored improperly for a long time or if it’s placed in a damp room? That would help a lot in identifying the cause.
Wow, really interesting question here! 🙂
I once had a Malm dresser that was slightly warped in one spot, and I can confirm: there is definitely hope!!
What really helped me was taking the dresser completely apart and checking all the screws. Then I wiped all parts with a lightly damp cloth, carefully making sure that no sides were swelling from moisture. After that, I slowly and patiently reassembled the dresser – tightening every single element securely.
This might seem trivial at first, but this routine made my dresser noticeably more stable and straight. I think especially with flat-pack furniture, sometimes the finishing touches make all the difference.
So: don’t despair right away, but check and care for each part step by step, and maybe give it a little extra attention – that really is key when it comes to furniture.
You’ve got this!

Bending back is difficult to impossibleI completely agree and would like to add: With laminated wood furniture, like the Malm dresser, the material structure is highly unsuitable for deformation. Another often overlooked factor is storage: uneven loading or pressure can easily cause frames to warp permanently.

Completely disassembling the dresser and checking all screwsThat is sensible, but without proper adjustment of each part, reassembling can also create new stresses that fix a slight deformation.
I would recommend keeping the dresser upright on as level a surface as possible and checking whether the initial alignment of the drawers is correct. A methodical approach that guides the individual parts to their optimal position is crucial.
In the end, you also have to consider that Ikea furniture is affordable and functional but doesn’t always offer the stability and durability of more expensive solid wood furniture. This means some flexibility exists – and minor warping might be acceptable as long as functionality is not affected.
What do you think, Mintunaha7 – are you planning to keep the furniture or push for a replacement?
