ᐅ My KALLAX shelf is chipping after contact with a cleaning product – is this normal?

haumeoHello everyone,
I noticed that my IKEA KALLAX shelf developed small paint chips in several spots after cleaning it with a common all-purpose cleaner. Is this normal? I didn’t dissolve or scrub the surface roughly, but just wiped it with a damp cloth and some cleaner. I’m usually quite careful when maintaining furniture, but it seems like the cleaner is damaging the finish here. Has anyone had similar experiences or can tell me if the KALLAX is sensitive to this? And if so, what are suitable cleaning products to avoid chipping? Thanks in advance!

In my case, the shelves became dull and slightly brittle at the edges after a thorough cleaning with a strong cleaner. I think the material is actually more sensitive than people realize. It would be helpful to know if there are cleaning products that IKEA officially recommends or if it’s better to stick to water and mild soap.
I would like to provide a brief explanation on this topic:
1. KALLAX shelves are made of coated particleboard, making the surface durable but not indestructible.
2. Strongly alkaline or acidic cleaners can damage the coating and cause the finish or surface layer to peel off.
3. The best approach is to clean with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and a neutral cleaning agent (e.g., a pH-neutral all-purpose cleaner).
If an aggressive cleaner was used or left on the surface for a long time, peeling can occur. It is also important not to clean with excessive moisture, as water can penetrate the material.

I think the material is really more delicate than you might expect. I agree with that.
In my case, after incorrect cleaning, the surface partially came off as well, especially at the corners, which are naturally more vulnerable. That thin protective coating suffers quickly if not maintained properly. I would simply recommend avoiding harsh cleaning agents altogether and, if needed, wiping down with clear water and a dry cloth to prevent residual moisture.
Oh yes, I know that problem too! 🙂
But don’t panic, it’s not the end of the world! KALLAX is very practical, but the surface is only melamine-coated and not very resistant to all chemicals. I always use lukewarm water, sometimes with a little dish detergent, and gently wipe the surface. For stubborn stains, it’s better to carefully use some fine sandpaper, especially if there are chips – small dents can easily disappear this way!

It is recommended to use only mild cleaners with a neutral pH and a soft cloth. Additionally, moisture should not penetrate the edge areas, as the underlying wood-based material (particleboard) swells when exposed to moisture, which can mechanically damage the surface.
