Hello everyone,
I noticed that my IKEA KALLAX shelf developed small paint chips in several spots after cleaning it with a common all-purpose cleaner. Is this normal? I didn’t dissolve or scrub the surface roughly, but just wiped it with a damp cloth and some cleaner. I’m usually quite careful when maintaining furniture, but it seems like the cleaner is damaging the finish here. Has anyone had similar experiences or can tell me if the KALLAX is sensitive to this? And if so, what are suitable cleaning products to avoid chipping? Thanks in advance!

I had this idea because it is often recommended as a natural cleaner in households. That’s understandable; many people assume that natural products are always harmless. Unfortunately, this is not always the case with coated furniture. The chemical composition matters more than the “natural” label. It’s great that you brought up this topic here – I’ve learned something new as well :-)
Summary:
- Never use aggressive, acidic, or solvent-based cleaners
- Clean with a microfiber cloth and a neutral all-purpose cleaner or just water
- Do not leave cleaners on the surface to sit
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or rough sponges
These are the most important points to best protect the finish of your KALLAX.
