Hello everyone,

I noticed that my IKEA KALLAX shelf developed small paint chips in several spots after cleaning it with a common all-purpose cleaner. Is this normal? I didn’t dissolve or scrub the surface roughly, but just wiped it with a damp cloth and some cleaner. I’m usually quite careful when maintaining furniture, but it seems like the cleaner is damaging the finish here. Has anyone had similar experiences or can tell me if the KALLAX is sensitive to this? And if so, what are suitable cleaning products to avoid chipping? Thanks in advance!

Use only lukewarm water and a microfiber cloth. Do not use strong cleaning agents or spray cleaners. This will help prevent further chipping.

Sometimes, even a short exposure to an aggressive cleaner can cause damage.

My advice: Test any new cleaners on an inconspicuous area first and wipe them off immediately without letting them sit. Additionally, it is advisable to use only water, neutral soaps, or specialized furniture cleaners that are specifically designed for coated surfaces.

One more important tip: never use harsh scrubbers or scouring pads. These can damage the surface’s micro-layers, which may cause chipping or cracking over time. For daily cleaning, a soft brush or the mentioned microfiber cloth is completely sufficient.

Thanks to everyone for the quick and detailed responses!

From now on, I will definitely avoid using strong cleaning agents and try a neutral cleaner instead, without letting it affect the material too much.

One question still remains for me: Are there any household remedies (vinegar, lemon juice, etc.) that are better avoided? I was thinking about this because they are often recommended as natural cleaners in the household.

Yes, definitely avoid them! These substances are acidic and can damage or discolor the melamine coating. They also promote weathering and peeling of the surface finish. Therefore, vinegar, lemon juice, and similar products are not suitable for KALLAX.

Vinegar and lemon juice are not recommended because their acidity can damage the material. Neutral cleaners are the safe option.
