Hello everyone,

I’m currently considering using a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA on my balcony. Specifically, I’m wondering: can the KALLAX shelf really withstand outdoor weather conditions, and is it sturdy enough to hold items like plant pots, decorative elements, or even a watering can?

I understand that KALLAX is actually designed for indoor use, but I would like to use it creatively as storage and a surface on the balcony. I’m especially interested in how resistant the shelf is to moisture and temperature changes, as frost and rain often occur here.

Has anyone had experience using KALLAX outdoors? If so, how does it hold up in terms of stability and durability after several months or even years? Are there any tips to extend its lifespan, or is it better to avoid this altogether?

I look forward to your feedback and thank you in advance!

The KALLAX is not designed for outdoor use. Moisture will cause the wood to swell, and frost may cause it to crack. It is best to use it in covered areas or to treat it with waterproof varnish.

I have tested KALLAX shelves on my balcony and can give you a detailed assessment. Essentially, KALLAX is made of coated particleboard, which is designed for interior use and not for exposure to moisture. The coating is quite thin – even slight dampness can cause the material to swell and warp over time.

If you want to use the shelf, there are some steps you can take to extend its usability:

1. Sand the surfaces and then apply multiple coats of a high-quality, waterproof acrylic varnish or wood preservative. This will seal the surface.

2. Don’t place the shelf directly on the floor; instead, use feet or pads that keep it off the ground, preventing water contact and allowing airflow.

3. Avoid direct sunlight – UV radiation makes the surface brittle and accelerates coating aging.

4. Ideally, position it in a covered area, such as a balcony section that is protected from rain.

After about 1 to 2 years, you will likely notice wear, even if you take precautions. So if you are looking for a long-lasting shelf, I would recommend choosing outdoor-specific shelving made from plastic or metal.

I’m also curious about your balcony: Is it covered or completely open? And what kind of loads are you planning to place on the shelf?

I completely agree! I have my KALLAX shelf on the balcony, and honestly, after just 6 months it already looks quite worn. The edges have started to swell slightly in some areas, even though the balcony is only partially covered.

But hey, the concept is great: creating storage space on the balcony! 🙂 Maybe using boxes or weather-resistant containers in the compartments could help protect the shelf itself?

Is its stability sufficient to place, for example, plant pots, decorative items, or even a watering can on it?

Plant pots and watering cans won’t damage the shelf as long as you distribute the weight evenly. Only very heavy or large pots often cause deformation. For example, I have flowers in small to medium pots on mine; the shelf handles this well.
