Dear community,

I recently purchased some IKEA BESTÅ furniture, which is very practical and visually appealing, but I am concerned about safety, especially regarding tipping hazards. Since I have small children at home, protection is very important to me.

My question for you is: "How can I securely prevent IKEA BESTÅ furniture from tipping over?" I am looking for proven and long-term solutions or methods that do not just help occasionally but reliably stop the furniture from tipping. I am particularly interested in:

- What types of fastening systems (e.g., wall anchors, specialized securing straps) are effective and durable?
- Are there tips on how to improve the stability of the furniture through DIY measures?
- What should be considered during assembly to maximize safety?
- Are there any experiences or recommendations for additional accessories available on the market?

I look forward to rational and well-founded answers that will help me make the furniture child-safe and accident-free. Thank you in advance!

To secure IKEA BESTÅ units against tipping, I recommend the following approach:

- Use the original wall mounting kits provided by IKEA for each piece of furniture in this series. These are designed to match the weight and construction and are the best choice for reliable securing.

- For additional stability, use durable anchors and appropriate screws suitable for the wall type (e.g., concrete, drywall). Cheap or unsuitable fasteners can significantly compromise safety.

- When installing, ensure the furniture is positioned exactly square and level against the wall. This prevents uneven load distribution and pressure points that could increase the risk of tipping.

- If you combine multiple BESTÅ units, it is better to screw them together to create a continuous, stable structure.

If you have any further questions about the specific installation, I am happy to assist.

The issue of furniture stability is especially important for BESTÅ systems, as their modular design and light weight can increase the risk of tipping over.

I recommend:

- Use combined anchoring methods: the IKEA wall fasteners plus additional corner brackets or metal angles beneath the top panel to make the furniture more rigid.

- Check the condition of your wall before installation. For drywall, special cavity anchors are recommended; for solid walls, use standard anchors with appropriate load capacity.

- To improve stability, you can also adjust the feet or place heavy items in the lower compartments to keep the center of gravity low.

- Make sure all doors and drawers are closed during wall mounting, as open elements can shift the center of gravity.

This systematic approach significantly reduces the risk of tipping.

I can only agree! IKEA doesn’t do this without reason – the original mounting hardware is usually pretty straightforward and holds firmly.

I also added so-called “anti-tip straps,” actual straps with a ratchet system that are screwed to both the wall and the furniture. They’re inexpensive, available at hardware stores, and provide extra security.

And honestly: placing heavier decorations or books on the lower shelves instead of stacking them on top really helps. Small children like to climb on furniture sometimes, and that’s when things get risky.

I completely understand the desire for safety. Furniture safety is like a good friend – you only realize how important it is when you need it 😉.
