Hello everyone, I am planning to build a kitchen island using the IKEA Metod system, which will serve not only as a cooking and work surface but also provide multifunctional storage space. My question is: What modular options and combinations are available to optimize storage efficiency in a Metod island, especially regarding various drawer types, internal organizers, and possible special features such as foldable countertops or integrated waste sorting? I have some experience with kitchen planning but would like to gather as many practical tips as possible to avoid purchases that don’t fit my needs or waste space. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Hello Gerolf51, in general, Metod is well suited for building multifunctional islands due to its high modularity. It is important beforehand to clearly define the exact dimensions and desired functions. Regarding storage: Metod offers side drawers in various heights (e.g., 20cm (8 inches), 40cm (16 inches), 80cm (31 inches)) that can be combined effectively. For the interior, using pull-outs with internal organizers is recommended, which can be customized individually for cutlery, pans, or pantry items.

Regarding your question about foldable countertops: IKEA does not offer a standard hinged countertop option. I have experimented with hinges myself, but this requires careful installation. A more practical solution is retractable shelves or additional racks under the countertop for frequently used items.

Concerning waste sorting: The Metod system includes various integrated waste bin solutions that can be installed beneath the countertop and are suitable for islands as well. It is advisable to choose combinations with soft-close pull-outs to reduce noise.

What is often underestimated are the load limits of the shelves and the stability of the side panels, especially with frequent use or heavy appliances. Pay close attention to the correct assembly of the metal cabinet frames here.

I would be interested to know how large your planned island will be and which functions are absolutely necessary, as this may further narrow down the options.

Thank you for the detailed advice! The island is planned to be about 1.2 meters (4 feet) wide and 2.4 meters (8 feet) long, large enough for efficient working and storage. Functionally, it must include integrated waste separation. Additionally, I would like a section for cooking utensils, an area for storage jars, and at least one drawer with a special internal divider for knives and other sharp tools. A small pull-out work surface would be nice but is not essential. Load capacity is important to me, as I occasionally want to place heavier kitchen appliances like a stand mixer or blender on it.

Are there any recommendations regarding suitable Metod base cabinets or accessories, especially for an island of the mentioned size?

Hey Gerolf51, your size and functional description sounds really exciting! IKEA Metod mainly offers 60cm (24 inch) deep base cabinets for an island of this size, which are easy to combine.

- For waste sorting: get the base cabinet with a pull-out system designed specifically for trash bins—it fits perfectly into a 60cm (24 inch) wide unit.
- Cooking utensils fit best in drawer organizers, which IKEA sells as sets—I personally find them great for cutlery!
- Pantry jars? I store those in wide drawers with removable dividers, so you keep everything organized and within easy reach.

The best part: the metal drawer slides can hold heavy loads, so a kitchen appliance is no problem at all. And if you want, you can also add very practical clamp rails for cutting boards. Don’t get discouraged—an island like this is a DIY project that’s really enjoyable! Good luck 🙂

The metal drawers are very durable and can easily support a kitchen appliance.

This statement is generally correct; however, when using heavy appliances in Metod island units, it is important to ensure proper fastening and stabilization of the cabinet carcasses. Connectors should ideally be used multiple times to sufficiently reinforce side panels and shelves.

For your dimensions and requirements, I recommend using two 60 cm (24 inch) wide base cabinets combined with at least one 40 cm (16 inch) wide unit. A combination of drawers at different heights (e.g., two deep drawers below and a shallower upper compartment) significantly increases storage space.

Waste sorting can be efficiently managed with an integrated pull-out, for example using VARIERA bins from IKEA. Full-extension drawer slides should be prioritized for internal organization to maximize accessibility.

Pull-out countertops are not included in the Metod system, but third-party providers offer special solutions compatible with Metod. The countertop itself should be made of durable material, such as composite, to withstand the weight of heavy appliances.

When planning the interior layout, attention should be paid to full-extension drawers to maximize accessibility.

So, full-extension drawers would be strongly recommended? What about the maximum possible load capacity? I’ve also heard about large soft-close fittings with damping that are said to improve durability and ease of use. Should these generally be preferred for Metod islands, or are standard runners sufficient? How significant are the differences in practice?

Also: Are there drawers with specially shaped inserts for knives available in the Metod range? If not, what would be your recommended solution for safely storing sharp objects?
