Hello everyone, I have a somewhat more specific question about caring for Ikea Hemnes furniture in the summer: Are there any special care tips or recommendations to consider during the warm season to best protect the light wood and surfaces? Perhaps factors like humidity or sunlight exposure play a role that should be taken into account with Hemnes. I want to avoid the wood discoloring, becoming brittle, or cracking. Does anyone have experience or know good maintenance routines for this type of furniture in summer conditions?

Avoid moisture and direct sunlight. It is best to dust the furniture regularly and wipe it with a lightly damp cloth, but do not soak it. In summer, also pay attention to humidity levels – air that is too dry can cause the wood to dry out.

Hello tomvin, here is a brief care guide for Ikea Hemnes during summer:

- First, avoid strong direct sunlight, as the light lacquer finish can fade over time. Ideally, place it in a bright but shaded location.
- Clean the wood regularly by dusting it with a microfiber cloth.
- Moisture is important: Hemnes is made of solid wood, which is sensitive to fluctuations. Therefore, use a slightly damp cloth rather than one soaked with water. Also, maintain a room humidity level between 40 and 60%.
- Stain rollers or wax sprays are not necessary; usually, gentle cleaning alone is enough. If you want a protective layer, special furniture waxes for lacquered surfaces are suitable but should be applied sparingly.
- Avoid harsh cleaning agents or solvents, as they can damage the lacquer.

In summary: gentle cleaning, shade, moderate humidity, and no aggressive products. Hope this helps!

I fully agree with giabau’s comments. To preserve the light finish of Hemnes furniture, even during the summer, it is important to avoid placing the furniture directly next to heating sources or air conditioning units. These create dry air, which can make the wood brittle and, over time, lead to stresses and small cracks. An additional benefit: use humidifiers when it becomes very hot and dry. Increased protection against UV radiation can also be achieved with curtains or blinds. This helps prevent color changes and extends the lifespan of the surfaces.

Avoid direct sunlight. Regularly wipe the furniture and maintain dry air. This is sufficient to protect Hemnes furniture even during the summer.

That is true, but I find the statement somewhat oversimplified. Ikea mostly uses pine wood for Hemnes, which, while solid wood, has a relatively high tolerance for moisture fluctuations. Of course, extreme drying or constant moisture spikes should be avoided, but the furniture can generally handle normal summer conditions quite well. In my opinion, care instructions should not be interpreted too strictly, as insufficient care does not automatically cause damage to Ikea Hemnes. The often-cited cracking is rather rare in normal living spaces, unless there is truly extreme dryness or direct sunlight over several days.
