ᐅ Should the garage be aligned flush with the house or set back?

Hello forum,

I am currently considering whether to build a garage flush with the house or set it back towards the garden. Building it flush would create a more compact structure and allow for more space in the "small" garden. Setting it back towards the garden would provide more privacy on the terrace but reduce the garden area somewhat.

Are there any general opinions on this?

Well, what background information is needed?

Anyway, please include everything in the text; my crystal ball is currently at the repair shop.

Create privacy screening towards the northern plots by recessing the building,

...this wouldn’t be a problem here, as there is little shade expected from the north anyway. However, with the house aligned flush at this position, there would no longer be a full second parking space in front of the single garage, and the main entrance would be fixed on the narrow side (which is usually not ideal).

Is the blue rectangle actually representing the house to scale, or is it just a placeholder for position (and therefore of very limited value for this discussion)?

Having some sort of courtyard area is also worth considering – do people still repair bikes themselves these days? Or does the vehicle replace that?

That could be achieved if necessary with a privacy screen or some shrubs.

Garage and house aligned, which would look nicer visually somehow

I don’t really agree with that.

Thanks for the site plan, but I would also base the design on the floor plan or the entrance side.
Also: are there children who would use the courtyard? Is there a financial constraint leading to a short driveway?
And what kind of development is there at the northern neighbors?

Currently, these are considerations, so the boxes are placeholders. Here is the information about the street and, if applicable, the entrance.

Here are a few additional details. The entrance is currently planned on the short side.
Site plan: Blue house with terrace, red property boundaries, north arrow, entrance to the street.

Why isn’t that ideal?
11ant, with your well-known name here in the forum, I would at least expect a crystal ball ;-)

Yes, shade is not expected, but privacy screening for the terraces in the gardens to the north is needed. The house faces south.

PS: That you can only edit posts for a few minutes is really frustrating....

Due to the plot size, I would not position the garage further into the property than necessary. It is better to use some plants as a visual screen. The neighbor is already relatively "far" away from your terrace.
