ᐅ Should the garage be aligned flush with the house or set back?

Hello forum,

I am currently considering whether to build a garage flush with the house or set it back towards the garden. Building it flush would create a more compact structure and allow for more space in the "small" garden. Setting it back towards the garden would provide more privacy on the terrace but reduce the garden area somewhat.

Are there any general opinions on this?

Currently, these are just considerations, so the boxes serve as placeholders.

Why isn’t this great?
11ant, given your well-known name here on the forum, I at least expect a crystal ball ;-)

PS: Allowing posts to be edited for only a few minutes is outrageous....

I would rather call it sheer thoughtlessness, but that was not the reason for the resignation of our only crystal ball owner @Escroda. A narrow-side entrance leads to inefficient interior access in the house; with a placeholder, it’s not even meaningful yet to decide where the entrance should be. The very first insight gained from placing the dummy on the plot should actually be to question the gable orientation of the house. One of the surest ways to fail a house design is to start the design process at the worst possible point. Is there even a thread from you here that begins with the completed questionnaire, so our floor plan designers have a basis for suggestions (or useful height information for the man in the group)?

Yes, of course.
No, there isn’t a thread like this with a completed questionnaire yet.
Since the ridge direction is specified perpendicular to the street, with the gable facing the street, this arrangement is basically the only option given the "small" lot size.
Additionally, there is no slope.

Yeah, sure.
Even the clearest insights are only useful if you put them into practice:

Additional info: no slope.
Then it’s time to 1. start a new thread with the completed questionnaire; 2. link to this one; 3. there address the resulting follow-up question of whether a specific length ratio to the building axis is also specified. It’s best if you mention (but don’t link to) the zoning plan as well. Additional note: what some laypeople call “no slope” can be very variable.

I have not yet read about wind protection.

Possibly, some kind of sun protection could also be installed on the garage (beams).

Two things that, in my opinion, are very important.

Of course, you can start with a placeholder house and a detailed garage plan. Why not?! This way, you set your priorities 😉

However, many aspects are complex and interconnected. The incremental approach often mentioned by @11ant leads to a result similar to combining Duplo and Lego bricks: it works, but with some limitations.

I would not necessarily assume a standard house with standard dimensions given these plot measurements. Therefore, a different layout might still emerge.

Thanks for the comment.

But I have a question.

What exactly is a standard house with standard dimensions? And when does a house stop being a standard house?
Is this standardized anywhere?
