Hello,
we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the stage of deciding on the lawn.
We want to edge the lawn with mowing guides (about 24cm (9.5 inches) wide) and have the lawn regularly maintained by a robotic mower later.
What would you recommend: laying sod or sowing the lawn from seed ourselves? We have about 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of lawn area.
Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and resilient (it shouldn’t dry out quickly in summer or become waterlogged during heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in full sun with little shade (south-west facing).
The lawn should also withstand regular walking and running (for when children play or with the dog).
The house handover is planned for February or March 2023.
I hope you can help me (I’m not very experienced with this).

We had already thought about getting a robotic lawn mower to save us the work of mowing. We’re not talking about 1000 sqm (10,764 sq ft) here. You can get through that quickly and manage with any battery-powered models without much noise or cables. Otherwise, the type of grass determines the effort required—not only for mowing but also for watering, fertilizing, and so on.

I can’t say much yet about the soil. The topsoil was set aside during the construction phase. On the hill with the topsoil, everything is already growing well. You surely have a soil report. That should include information on water infiltration. Although you can usually tell about waterlogging and lots of mud on the construction site anyway 😉

What do you think about special grasses for robotic mowers? You can create a market niche out of anything.

There’s enough to do inside during the new build, so it’s not a problem to give the lawn the time it needs. Then go ahead and sow.

Which type of grass would you recommend? A sports lawn? A robotic mower lawn?

but doesn’t a robotic lawn mower improve the grass quality by constantly mulching? When you mow the lawn and compost (or otherwise dispose of) the clippings, you remove nutrients from the soil. At the same time, frequent cuts stimulate growth. Mulching can help counteract this by returning nutrients, and there are also mulching mowers (higher blade speed and no catcher). This achieves the same effect. The robot can do this a bit better because it can run every day, whereas you manually mow only once a week. With roll-out turf, you are definitely faster and have less work during the first few weeks.
As soon as there is a slope involved, I would definitely go for roll-out turf.
A robotic lawn mower is great. Always replace the blades early enough. This is usually done too late, resulting in white tips on the grass.
“Oversize” the robotic mower. The coverage areas are calculated for 7 days, 24 hours operation on a square lot.
Choose one with significantly higher capacity. This way, it only needs to mow a few hours per day.
You still need to fertilize and water. Thanks to the mulching function of the robotic mower, less fertilizer is required.
I would also install an automatic irrigation system right away. It won’t get easier than this for a new lawn setup.

Pwnage6191 Jun 2022 11:50@rick2018 Thanks, so it was correct of me to choose a robotic lawn mower.
We have a rectangular garden, 10m (33 feet) wide and 20m (66 feet) deep. Along the edges by the fence, we want to plant flowers and border them with edging stones.
Our garden will (hopefully) be level and not have a slope.
What would the automatic irrigation look like? Are you referring to the Gardena system?

Definitely not Gardena. Use sprinklers from Hunter or Rainbird. Pipes should be PE HD (potable water pipes).
Gardena is way overpriced for irrigation and not as high quality.
You can use Gardena for the control system, but Hunter Hydrawise is better.
Yes, robotic mowers are great. I have two (Husqvarna 415X and 435 AWD). Very convenient because the lawn always looks maintained, even if you're away for a few days.
