Hello everyone,

As mentioned above, we want to get a robotic lawn mower to start the spring season.
Which ones do you use, recommend, or avoid, and why?
Does it have to be a Husqvarna, or is a Worx also good enough? Why one and not the other?
I’m very interested in hearing about your experiences.

Best regards

One does not exclude the other. :p
I also have robotic lawn mowers. The "large" 435 x awd is not yet in operation. In addition, I have a large battery-powered lawn mower from Stihl and a multifunction tractor with a 122cm (48-inch) cutting deck...
It also makes a difference whether you have to or are allowed to mow 100 or 1000 m² (1,076 or 10,764 sq ft).
A robotic mower cuts every day. Cutting a lot at once is bad for the lawn...

Hello,
I can only agree with Rick2018’s comments.

A life without a robotic mower is possible, but pointless.... ! 😎

There is nothing more relaxing than watching the mower at work while the neighbors struggle with their lawnmowers.... Otherwise, I would have to mow at least twice a week, spending about 1.5 hours each time. The mower gives me back 3 hours of free time every week!

We have a Gardena smart sileno. It is designed for 1000 sqm (10,764 sq ft), but it would need to run 24/7 to handle that area.
To allow our children to play peacefully in the garden and leave their toys around, and to avoid disturbing anyone at night (hedgehogs and similar animals are rarely injured by such a mower, but they are disturbed during their search for food, which is avoidable), I decided it should not run for more than about 6 hours a day.
We have a 250 sqm (2,690 sq ft) lawn, so this works out pretty well.

Why Gardena?
  • It is basically built on Husqvarna technology; most parts even have Husqvarna part numbers.
  • Very quiet. In our residential area, there are also several Bosch and Worx models in use, which are noticeably louder.
  • At the time, it was unbeatable in price thanks to the Hornbach price guarantee....

At first, I thought the Smart Gateway was just a fun gadget, but today I would definitely buy it again. It simply offers the convenience of setting mowing times easily via the app, sending the mower back to its station remotely (you can do both functions directly on the device, but it’s much more complicated), and receiving error notifications on your phone. Our "Otto" runs completely smoothly, but once or twice a year it does get stuck, either because the lawn is soaked by rain or it gets caught on forgotten children’s toys. In those cases, the notification is extremely valuable.

A word on children and toys on the lawn: yes, the mower has several safety features, but don’t rely on them completely. Otto has already run over and shredded some small, flat toys. It reliably stops only when it hits objects at least 10 cm (4 inches) high. I would not let very young children play on the lawn while the mower is operating.

Best regards,

Andreas

The information about hedgehogs is unfortunately incorrect. Talk to people who work at hedgehog rescue centers. Hedgehogs can be seriously injured by robotic lawn mowers if they are hit.

So, if you have a garden where hedgehogs might live, please do not operate these devices during dusk and at night.

It always depends on the robotic lawn mower. Modern ones with many sensors are not an issue. However, we are no longer talking about mowers costing around 1000€ here.

What @rick2018 wrote is actually correct. You just need to read carefully what he said. He is talking about robotic mowers with the appropriate sensors that avoid obstacles. In that context, his statement is accurate.

By the way, I have a Worx model designed for 1000 m² (10,764 sq ft). It runs smoothly and is not any louder than the neighbor’s Husky. Worx, Gardena, and Husky are all available here, and they all operate without issues.

First of all, many thanks for the great feedback. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to respond in more detail before this evening. Until then, I’m looking forward to seeing if more interesting contributions come in. *thumbs up*
