ᐅ Experiences with Starlink from SpaceX or GigaCube?

Hello everyone!

The first obstacle has come up: In our temporary accommodation, where we plan to live during the construction phase, there is no DSL connection available for us.
In the region, a provider (Inexio, formerly Quix) has expanded their network, and I was able to order broadband from them – but I just received an order confirmation stating that the technology at our installation address is not yet deployed, and they can’t give us a scheduled activation date. 🙄
That’s just great – selling connections without having the capacity. Talking to support revealed that the distribution point (cabinet) at our address is full, so they’d have to expand it first, but whether and when that will happen is unclear.
Via the national telecom provider, we get 2 Mbit down, which is not enough for working.

Now we have two options: a Gigacube from Vodafone or something similar (are there other providers like this?), or Starlink.
Edit: Luckily, LTE is available at the address.
Starlink, of course, has high initial costs. And their website provides very little information, despite asking for consent to charge about 700€ (euros) with just two clicks.
Does anyone here have experience with Starlink (or Gigacube) and can share their experience?

Good luck,

My advice: get an inexpensive prepaid SIM card from all providers and test which one has the best reception. Especially indoors, particularly in the planned office.
Then use the product from that provider.
Vodafone offers the Gigacube, O2 has something similar (I forgot the name), and Telekom provides a hybrid solution (DSL line with LTE fallback – which might be interesting for home office use, since 2 Mbps is better than 0 if there are issues with the reception tower).

I have only seen very recent user reports about Starlink online (I'm simply interested).

Pros:
- High download speeds (150-300 Mbit/s) and upload speeds (50-100 Mbit/s)
- Latency is acceptable at 20-40 milliseconds
- Flat-rate pricing
- Easy setup

Cons:
- High initial cost
- Possible connection drops lasting several hours
- High ongoing costs (approx. 100€ monthly) plus significant electricity consumption (router uses over 100 watts!)

My conclusion: It’s only really worth it if you live truly in a remote area. Otherwise—if a limited data allowance is sufficient and LTE is available—using the Gigacube or Telekom Hybrid is preferable.

Just use a FritzBox LTE router with an affordable data SIM card. Alternatively, a Gigacube can be used. Starlink only makes sense if no other options are available. In that case, it should be installed permanently on the roof or similar.

Oh, thanks, that’s an idea. I didn’t know about Fritzbox LTE before. :O

We have a small Netgear device that provides me with internet via mobile network when I work outside of Switzerland. The purchase price back in 2020 was around 200 CHF. The latency is quite manageable as long as you are not using a GUI on remote systems. Everything works smoothly with the CLI.
