Hi,

I am about to install carpet over a roughly 17-year-old (relatively new) screed floor. The surface is very even, and I have meticulously removed all minor protrusions (such as spilled filler and similar).

Now I was ready to start with the carpet (not fully glued down) when I suddenly noticed a single, small hole in the screed at the last moment. It is about 8mm (0.3 inches) in diameter and approximately 8mm (0.3 inches) deep (the screed itself is 6cm (2.4 inches) thick). The hole appeared superficially rust-brown. After cleaning by scraping, only the edges remain slightly brown.

Does this hole necessarily need to be filled, or can I simply lay the carpet over it?

Thank you very much for any advice!

Just lay the carpet and you're done. Don't worry about it.

Basically, I agree with mycraft, but I would still close the hole (with mortar, plaster, or some wood that’s available). With that diameter, you might actually notice it. Or a woman wearing high heels could, depending on what is laid there, poke through it and then you would have a hole in whatever is on top.

Put anything in there, chewing gum or amalgam would also be an option 🙂. And afterwards, just try to live as calmly as possible..........

I would seal it with drywall. That is the quickest method.

Would it make sense to first form a working group to investigate the cause of the hole?
