Hello everyone,

The building manager in the apartment I moved into just installed laminate flooring directly over the carpet. I’ve heard several times that this is not a good idea – but why exactly? What problems could I expect to face?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Yogi,

You cannot measure flatness using carpet because then you are measuring the flatness of the carpet, not the subfloor.
Who guarantees that no moisture is coming from underneath? Who guarantees that there hasn’t been a burst water pipe? Who guarantees that a bucket of water hasn’t recently spilled?

The inspection requirements are nominally regulated and must be properly carried out by professionals. If you haven’t carried out a CM (calcium carbide) moisture test and a dispute arises, you will lose with any expert.

Of course, you can do whatever you want, but it is not compliant, and as soon as there is a dispute, you will be at a serious disadvantage.

Which customer would pay you to measure moisture in their living room where a carpet has been in place for years? If there had been a pipe leak, the residents would know about it, and the carpet certainly wouldn’t still be there.

In a rental apartment, as a tenant I wasn’t allowed to remove the existing carpet and installed laminate flooring directly over it. It has now been nearly 7 years without any damage.

Hello Yogi,

according to VOB DIN 18356, section 4.1.6, the first measurement is considered an ancillary service and must be carried out free of charge. It must be documented and provided to the customer together with the maintenance instructions or upon request.

What’s the point of that with an old screed? I understand it with a new screed. Where would the moisture come from? And what about on wooden floorboards?
What would you do if you had to install laminate flooring in a tenant’s apartment and the existing carpet belongs to the apartment and must not be removed? I don’t understand what is supposed to happen there.

Hello Yogi,

Moisture measurement can be done on wooden floorboards, but a CM measurement is not possible.

The point is not why it is useful, I want to help protect you as a potential floor installer from making mistakes, because you never know in advance if there will be problems later on, and if you haven’t done any measurement, you have most likely lost any claim in the process.

Putting aside the question of whether it’s allowed or not...
We had a low-pile carpet in the house and installed laminate flooring over it. Apart from the fact that all the doors had to be rehung higher or trimmed, I haven’t had any problems so far. The laminate has now been in place for 7 years.
