Hello

we are looking for a garden shed or storage shed for our garden

Can anyone recommend a good garden shed for tools and storage space?
What should we consider?
Which material is best? I don’t want real wood because of maintenance requirements, and it should not be extremely noisy in the rain (usually metal)
What size is typical? I was thinking about something around 3 x 3m (10 x 10 ft) or so
Do you need to pour a foundation, or are ground slabs enough?

What should be considered?
Whether a building permit / planning permission is required or not.
Whether there are minimum setback requirements or not.
Consider what the structure will be used for and what kind of protection it should provide.

The design of the structure depends on these factors. Depending on the location and type of building, just a few ground anchors can serve as a “foundation” or to prevent it from being blown away. Concrete slabs are usually sufficient as well. Of course, higher-quality solutions are always possible. In the garden, I prefer a practical, “African” approach that I learned from my father, who grew up in Angola — working with what’s available, thinking things through a bit, and just getting it done. If something breaks, you can repair or improve it yourself. Some people are surprised how cost-effective and reliable this method is, and how long the structures can last.

ok
can you recommend good manufacturers or suppliers of garden sheds where I can take a look?
they shouldn’t be too expensive either.

planned to store are basic items like a lawn mower, charcoal grill, and 2-3 bicycles

the shed shouldn’t be too small either. preferably as large as possible

I’d say the price range is max 1000-1500€

which material is better, metal or WPC (wood-plastic composite)?
the shed definitely needs to be weather-resistant and maintenance-free (no painting or similar)
are metal sheds very noisy during rain?

Hello,

if metal and wood are ruled out, your only option left is PVC. I once had a trash bin enclosure made of it and never again! Plastic is not suitable for outdoor use; it blew away in a storm!

I don’t understand the objection to wood. What kind of effort does it require? I painted the wood once and then did nothing for 5 years. Everything was fine.

I don’t share your concerns about the maintenance required for wood. Larch can be left untreated for a very long time, and even cheap garden sheds from hardware stores hold up well and remain attractive if you take care of them properly. Plastic is completely unnecessary in this case, so I can’t recommend it.

What about metal? Are they really that loud when it rains?

I thought wood needs to be painted or treated regularly, like every year.
