Hello everyone,

I want to add a "stone wall" feature for aesthetic purposes in my new build.

Currently, all walls are plastered with a two-coat lime plaster. However, one wall should have a different look.

There are three options to clad the wall...

1. Wallpaper
But this is not my favorite because it doesn’t look very authentic.
2. Real stone cladding
This can probably never be removed without damaging the plaster.
3. EPS (expanded polystyrene) cladding
This is likely also glued on. The question is how easily it can be removed if you no longer like it.

Currently, my favorite is option 3.
Does anyone have experience with such a system? How easily can it be taken down?
Is the system difficult to install?

Best regards

I don’t have any experience with it. Only with real stone veneers (which are easy to install) and Planeo real stone panels (only a few millimeters thick, dimensions 60cm x 40cm (24 inches x 16 inches) - simply glued to the wall).
But I wouldn’t put plastic fake stones on the wall in a new build.

Stucco moldings glued onto plaster (also just polystyrene) have also caused some surface detachment of the plaster.

If the well-being of the wall or plaster is important to you, then glue a painter’s fleece underneath. That way, no matter what you put on top, you won’t have any problems.

Thanks for the tips,

if I stick painter’s fleece to the wall, can I then glue real stones directly onto it without them coming off?

I don’t want to have to remove the stones in 10 years and completely replaster the wall underneath.

The thing about the fake stones is true. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen them in real life yet. In pictures, they look very authentic.

At least that's what the painter explained to me.

I don’t think so…

Completely replastering is exaggerated. Smoothing the surface once would be more accurate.

Smoothing isn’t that easy with fine plaster that has become matted. In this case, the surface is not completely smooth.

You will have to face a loss either way. Bonding won’t be without consequences. The idea of placing a fleece layer in between is good, perhaps using one that is as thick/heavy as possible.
