Hello,

This year, I plan to build a bungalow on my plot with my construction company. A shed roof is basically a flat roof but slightly angled to allow better water drainage. In the past, flat roofs often had problems with leaks after a few years.

How is the modern construction method for a shed roof compared to a hip roof? Is a hip roof always more reliable than a shed roof in terms of leak prevention after 20 or 30 years? Or have shed roofs become watertight enough nowadays that, if built properly, there are no longer any disadvantages compared to hip roofs?

Good luck

Consider personal taste, local zoning regulations (building permit / planning permission), and functionality.

A shed roof is different from a flat roof. A shed roof has a higher ridge on the outer edge, allowing light to enter through windows, either into the attic or the ground floor. A shed roof permits slopes greater than 4 or 8 degrees (flat roof).

With windows as described, a house with a shed roof appears more modern than a conventional hipped roof.

A shed roof has a different structure than a hipped roof.

So, what do you want? Shed roof or flat roof?

Alternatively, I can also mention gable roofs along with hipped roofs.

Ultimately, the roof should suit the style of the house. For example, a shed roof would not suit a country house style.

The orientation of a shed roof has a greater impact on potential photovoltaic installation (depending on the actual roof pitch).

With a hip roof and a shallow pitch of up to 25° (25°), you can theoretically cover all roof sides.

As far as I know, a shed roof is usually more cost-effective than a hip roof.

Shed roof. The ugliest of all roof types... it always looks like the bad postmodern-inspired, asymmetrical architecture of the 1980s.

I always thought the same—that it kind of looks like a garden shed or storage building. But I’ve seen a pretty nice house with a mono-pitched roof in my future neighborhood. I’m not sure why that is.

I would like a bungalow with a modern layout.
A flat roof would be an option. However, because of concerns about potential leaks, I told the architect not to use a flat roof but rather a shed roof. In practice, the shed roof house turned out to be a bit more expensive than a hipped roof house.
My main concern is whether a shed roof is more prone to leaks compared to a hipped roof.
Price and appearance are up to me.
