Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!
That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...
Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...
The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.
After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.
The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

Exactly. Occio Mito. We saw them somewhere and instantly fell in love.
The lights above the table are from the company Braga, model Dune. I wouldn’t choose them again. Originally, we wanted the Stchu Moon by Cattellani & Smith and we really regret switching to the much cheaper Dune.
Reason: The Dune has three bulbs inside the sphere. If you sit at the wrong angle, it can cause glare. The Stchu Moon has an LED strip on the bottom edge of the lamp that directs light into the sphere. So the light is basically indirect, reflected from the inside of the sphere. Much better!
Also, the uneven inner texture of the Stchu Moon’s sphere looks nicer. But it really costs almost three times as much. Still, we have a bit of a thing for lamps anyway.
As I said, we regret switching to the Dune and will probably replace the lamps eventually. Let’s see, because according to the product specifications, the Stchu Moon only comes with a maximum 1.7m (5.6ft) power cord. We would need about 4m (13ft).
The table measures 120x300cm (47x118 inches).Great, thank you very much for the explanation.
I actually like the Dune very much. How would the situation look if the lamps were hung a little lower? Do you still see the problem with glare then? Because actually, almost all lamps cause glare if they are not lowered to a certain height—maybe I’m missing something.

What is the distance between the island and the kitchen wall in your setups? A kitchen like this is definitely on our wish list for our building project.
Best regardsThe walkway is 108cm (43 inches), and the distance between the cabinets is just under 130cm (51 inches).
They used to hang even higher; we have already lowered them. We don’t want to go any lower, though, because then you can’t see the person opposite you anymore, only the lamp. From a social interaction perspective, we didn’t find that very appealing...
As I said, with the Stchu Moon, it wouldn’t be an issue anyway, since the light is indirect.

Hmm... good idea, I think I'll give that a try!
We already have some frosted light bulbs (see picture), but as I said, they still cause glare.

The Catellani&Smith lamps are all pretty cool anyway. I immediately started drooling over that one:

But they only have cool lighting fixtures anyway—I would want to have every single one.
But as I said: lamps are my personal obsession, I’ll admit it.
