ᐅ Installing Light Fixtures

Good morning,

we have just moved into a newly built house for the first time and are a bit unsure about how to install the lights. In our rooms, there is a long, thick black cable hanging from the ceiling, from which three thinner colored wires come out. Should we simply cut off the thick cable? How exactly should we handle the three small thin wires?

Have you ever installed light fixtures in your previous apartment? It’s no different now, except that the exposed wires are longer and will need to be cut to the appropriate length by you.

The thick black part is not a cable but just a sheath for the three conductors.

If you are unsure (as can be seen from the questions), then have someone who is knowledgeable do it. Electricity is not to be taken lightly.

Giving you advice online here would be irresponsible. If someone experienced has shown you how to do it, you might be able to handle it yourself.

My husband has always been the one to hang the lights... however, that was not a new build back then, and now he's a bit unsure where to place the long cable... so we will simply shorten it to the length we need...

Oh, and before that we lived in an older building... I don't remember having three small cables hanging out there either...

This is how it looks once you remove the black insulation and connect the three wires (some lamps only have blue and brown).
If in your old apartment there weren’t three “wires” hanging out, the electrical installation must have been very old…

Wow, thank you so much for the picture!! So that means we remove the black casing 🙂 I was really overwhelmed because I wasn’t familiar with the black cover either. I just assumed it was done differently in older buildings 😀
