Hello everyone,
A basic question:
We can have tiles up to 1.4m (4.5 feet) high in the bathroom (included in the house price). However, we have planned to use 30 x 60cm (12 x 24 inches) tiles. Now, we could go with 1.2m (4 x 30cm / 4 x 12 inches) or 1.5m (5 x 30cm / 5 x 12 inches).
The tiler would prefer 1.5m (4.9 feet), but the tile supplier said 1.2m (3.9 feet) would look better.
This concerns the guest shower and bathroom. (Walk-in showers without a step will be fully tiled up to the ceiling.)
What are your suggestions?

I know glass is used as a wall covering in kitchens, and I basically like it, but it is always extremely expensive. These are (stable) glass panels that are painted on one side.
There are materials that allow walls to be coated seamlessly. The owner, Mr. Backstein, will surely be happy to provide information.
Otherwise, I think tiles are among the best building materials you can ask for and recommend reconsidering any dislike of them. The selection is huge, craftsmen’s experience is widespread, and the durability (when done properly) is virtually unlimited...
Glazing on ceramic has been around for thousands of years and lasts just as long.
One of the most beautiful buildings, in my opinion, is the Ishtar Gate – it is completely covered with tiles.

Did you also look for alternatives "back then"? I’m asking because I would prefer not to have tiles on the walls in any of the rooms. But without a convincing concept, I won’t be able to get my husband on board. Aren’t there "such" glass panels available nowadays? No, because we find matte tiles very beautiful.
Best regards,
Sabine

What do you have against tiles?I usually associate tiles with butcher shops or slaughterhouses. Rooms without tiles generally feel more homely to me. But my dislike is not absolute; there are beautiful tiles and design options. I was just interested in alternatives. However, I will involve you and the other forum members in the selection anyway.Breaking the association with an operating room or sausage kitchen is easily achieved by finishing the tiling no higher than the lintel height of the door, with the exception of the shower area.

Bertram10027 Apr 2020 23:49I would like to have a windowsill in the bathroom on the window. So far, I have always had bathrooms tiled all the way up to the ceiling, with tiled windowsills. It always looked like an industrial kitchen (the unattractive version of this design style) or like a hotel bathroom (the nicer version), but I never really found it successful. So I wouldn’t want that for myself if I had a choice.
I’ve also noticed that every topic you focus on becomes a “major issue.” In the end, I think it doesn’t really matter. One option looks good; the other looks good in a different way. You usually like something about your own choice (even if it’s the price), otherwise you wouldn’t have made that decision.
I’m curious to see your tile selection.
