Hello,

we still have a small portion of the contingency buffer left for a little extra feature.

We have the choice between the following two options, and we want to pick one:

- Exterior venetian blinds (also called louvered blinds) on two fixed floor-to-ceiling window units next to the front door (south-facing, no roller shutters, frosted glass). Cost including control system and wind sensor is about 1350€ (approximately $1,450).
- Fingerprint scanner on the front door. Total cost is about 1200€ (approximately $1,290).

We are having a hard time deciding. Both have advantages, and we could also choose to skip both if needed.

What would you choose?

An absolute scientific proof.
Sorry, but I absolutely don’t believe that a plastic roller shutter significantly contributes to thermal insulation.

Again, why wouldn’t a roller shutter, which even contains insulating materials itself (even if just the air chambers), and when closed creates an additional air insulation layer, noticeably retain heat in the house at night? Feel free to provide me with scientific evidence to the contrary, but logically, this makes a lot of sense. The only question is by how many percent.

Some positive effect is undoubtedly present.
I just doubt that it is significant.

Yes, the question is who you can believe on this.

Here is another photo showing an insulated roller shutter:

Sure, an airtight roller shutter with insulation will definitely help. However, I have never seen such a product before; I only know the beige plastic ones, often with holes. Therefore, the discussion should probably focus more on the roller shutter itself rather than on the general principle.

I believe that nowadays, this type of roller shutter is installed more frequently than average in new buildings—just as often as triple-glazed windows are installed or regarded as the standard.

However, this is only a guess, and I have no price comparisons between uninsulated and insulated roller shutters. Perhaps a forum user can provide some specific information on this?

The standard roller shutter is made of hollow plastic and is back-ventilated by air. The insulation effect of the slat itself is very limited; the air exchange between the windowpane and the slat almost completely negates the effect.
There are also insulated slats, as far as I know.
