Hello everyone,

Our plan has progressed to the point where the materials are becoming more definite. The exterior walls will be built using 49cm (19 inches) solid clay bricks.

Now we are wondering if it might be worthwhile to consider sloped reveals with this wall thickness.
  • How complex is it to install these, and how are they typically made (are there prefabricated bricks, or are they cut and plastered)?
  • Should they be done only on the inside or also on the outside?
  • Should the windows still be positioned centered?
  • Are there any known disadvantages?

Thanks and best regards.

Hello everyone,

Does no one here have any experience with this topic?

Regards.

Secondly, I assume we are still talking about this design https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/Grundriss-laengliches-efh-integrierte-Garage-kein-Keller.25006/page-3, and first of all, that your questions have not been fully understood yet.

Therefore, I will try to describe how I believe I have understood it: You want to widen the left and right reveals in a funnel shape with a straight lintel and straight window sill (?)

I would consider it sufficient on the inside and choose "straight" on the outside. The question

I don’t understand the word "still" here: in your floor plans, the windows are clearly drawn closer to the outside edge, and I would probably leave them roughly there.

I think several manufacturers offer special shaped bricks for this – but probably rather as traditional solid bricks in the now relatively small formats DF / NF / 2DF. In terms of thermal transmittance, these areas would likely become inhomogeneous compared to the rest of the wall.

However, I don’t consider the measure necessary either, as your window areas are not exactly minimal.

Hello ant11,

thank you for your reply. This design is not the very latest version, but it is still sufficient for this topic.

You were quite right in your assumption: straight lintels, straight window sills, and reveals that widen inward.

In the meantime, I have learned that the reveals will be cut at an angle. The distance from the "inside of the wall" to the "start of the window" is about 23 cm (9 inches) — calculated as 49 cm (19 inches) minus an 18 cm (7 inches) roller shutter box minus 8 cm (3 inches) window depth.

And this is currently the crucial point: whether 23 cm (9 inches) is still enough space for the angled reveals to be effective...

Why not? - that's about the inner half, and on the outer side I think it fits better "straight" to the house.
