ᐅ Oops…! We actually need a bedroom for a child after all…

Hello everyone...

So, in mid-April, a new housemate will be moving in with us. It wasn’t planned, but we’re really excited nonetheless!
At the moment, Child 1 has the bedroom, which is by far the warmest room in the house due to its southeast-facing position. The laundry and guest room is currently the bedroom, and Child 2’s room is used as an office.
On the floor plan, the bottom is north.

I’m now considering turning the Child 1 room into a combined office, laundry, and guest room; making the current bedroom the main bedroom; and converting Child 2’s room into the children’s bedroom. The little one probably won’t play upstairs very often at first... 😉

How would you approach this? Any ideas? Suggestions? Feedback?

Thank you for the congratulations.

7 months until the birth and 1 year in the bedroom...
about 1.5 years until moving into our own place... 🙂

Apparently.

I can’t tell you yet how it will be for us... :-)

OT:
I've heard of much longer periods. So one year is quite reasonable.
This probably also depends on whether and how long the children are breastfed.
Our little one also moved into his new space with his little bed at about one year old, after we moved into the new house. It might have been possible a few months earlier, but renovating the old apartment for a few weeks during the house construction just didn’t make much sense.

Hi,

congratulations again! Get some extra sleep now! 🙂
I would use Bedroom 1 for the first child, so both kids (if there is a second one) will have fairly equally sized rooms. My older brother always had the much bigger room, and that annoyed me throughout my childhood!

Also off-topic:
Yeah, our neighbor still breastfeeds her 2.5-year-old son and slept in the child’s room until the kid was 6 years old with the first one.... 🙄

But to each their own. Our little one moved to her own room after 6 weeks out of necessity because my wife and I were both so heavily congested that we sniffled and coughed all night and kept waking her up.
She then slept quite comfortably in her own bed and that’s how it stayed.
It can all work!

The main thing: stay relaxed, no matter what happens!

Little ones are much tougher and more resilient than you might think...! 😉

Best regards,
Andreas

That advice is really good 😎.

Extreme example – my completely subjective opinion: helicopter mom to the power of three.

Off-topic:
It’s not unusual for a child to sleep in a co-sleeper bed next to the parents during the early months. This is partly due to breastfeeding or possibly bottle feeding. It’s also related to fear of sudden infant death syndrome. Sure, there are some technical devices that are supposed to warn against this – but the trust in them is often missing. Interestingly, many mothers develop an “inner watchdog” that results in light sleep, enabling them to notice “unusual” things fairly quickly. My wife once jumped up – the child had wrapped his comfort blanket around his neck so tightly that he was having trouble breathing. I only found out about it after the fact.
On the other hand, I once jumped out of bed – like stung by a tarantula – because I half-slept and imagined the little one had stopped breathing. Well – he was breathing. I then breathed much faster 🤨;).
