ᐅ Double garage positioned perpendicular to the street

Hello everyone,

let's see if there is a general answer to my question.
We are considering positioning our double garage perpendicular to the street. Is there a general rule for how much maneuvering space is needed? The length of the driveway would be especially important here.

Thanks in advance,
Volker

Hello!

Do you mean perpendicular to the street, like in our case?

We have absolutely no issues with that; on the contrary, we are quite happy about the large driveway. Especially when guests come, because of the parking space in front of the house.

Best regards

I don’t really see any real advantage there. Crossing the “pedestrian traffic” to reach a parked front door isn’t ideal. It’s much more comfortable to be able to step out of the front door without having to watch for traffic.
If you have to build at least 5 meters (16 feet) from the street, with a 6-meter (20 feet) wide double garage, you still have at least 2 parking spaces in front of the garage. Otherwise, make the area in front of the house more spacious.

Please forget that idea again; the driveway must connect directly to the street, otherwise you will lose too much space. Your plot is too small for such experiments, and with the current plan, you would have to enter the garage from the north and push the house significantly towards the south.

The property I mentioned has a land area of over 1000m² (over 10,760 sq ft), so having 50m² (about 540 sq ft) of maneuvering space in front of the house doesn’t matter.

From the property boundary to the start of the garage door, it is 4.25 meters (14 feet) in our case... the door itself is 2.75 meters (9 feet)... so the driveway is already at least 7 meters (23 feet) long... but a double door is larger...

The width is just under 6 meters (20 feet)... it shouldn’t be any less than that...

The problem is that our plot is too short and narrow (or the house is too wide) for a driveway directly onto the street. Because the garage has direct access to the house, there aren't many options for designing the driveway.

@Speedy-OTW: We can't build the garage offset because we have direct access to the house.

That is possible even with an offset garage. @Speedy-OTW has it as well, from what I know about his general contractor and architect.
Why don’t you just place the garage door on the street side?
