Hello,
we are currently planning our house. In the open living area with kitchen, there should be a floor-to-ceiling, modern, narrow window in one spot. What width would you choose for this? Structural opening size! The window should be fixed.
Best regards

That depends on your kitchen layout 🙂

Then fine, not!
I don’t think she is that far along yet and just wants a rough shell measurement to continue planning the kitchen. Instead of offering a few simple tips, all she gets are silly requests like “give everything you have, even though you basically need to know everything already.”
- If the floor plan was finished, she wouldn’t need a measurement...
- Without a floor plan including windows, the kitchen planning can’t be completed yet...
So: kitchen cabinets are normally 60cm (24 inches) wide. You will eventually need a filler piece at the wall side, which is adjusted during installation to make sure all appliances fit properly. A typical floor-to-ceiling window with an external door is about 80cm (31 inches) wide. We don’t have that kind of window, so unfortunately I can’t give you an exact measurement. The neighbors all have windows like that.
Tip: Use the Ikea kitchen planner. As I said, these cabinets, end panels, etc. are largely standardized. You can roughly plan your kitchen there, add in the window, and then you’ll know how long the wall needs to be. You can also go to a kitchen studio, but they rarely give you paper plans.

j.bautsch29 Mar 2016 07:57Nowadays, kitchen cabinets range from 30 to 110 cm (12 to 43 inches) in width, so the idea of a "standard 60 cm (24 inches) wide" cabinet is no longer accurate. The current recommendation is actually a minimum of 80 cm (31 inches), just to mention.

That's right, we are still completely flexible. We would probably prefer a fixed window. We find that more aesthetically pleasing. There will be no other fixed windows on the wall, and all the others will be operable. A fixed window at 1m (3.3 ft) would probably look odd and might even have a door-like character! That’s why we have been considering the size for a while. There would be space for more than 1 meter, but we don’t want that.
