Every Sunday, I find myself wondering what kind of construction work is allowed or possible on Sundays and public holidays.
Usually, there isn’t much time during the week, so currently I’m working on the house every Sunday.
All the windows are installed, but we still have two construction doors that don’t provide good sound insulation.
For example, today I would need to clean up the debris from plastering the ceiling and vacuum the loose insulation fibers between the rafters.
My wife says, “That’s really not acceptable.”
What do you think? What kind of work have you done on Sundays?
Thanks.

On Sundays, it is generally recommended to avoid making noise. For example, in our area, people complain if you mow the lawn on a Sunday.
Skimming a ceiling is not considered loud; however, if you sand it using a power sander (probably with windows open due to dust), that would be too loud in our community.

In our street (all newly built houses), there is a multi-generational conflict. Retirees sold their houses and moved to the city, and now they are surprised that there is no official quiet time during midday and are demanding it.
During the holiday season, the street (a dead-end road with lots of children playing) was very lively.
The worst part is that people talk about each other a lot instead of talking to each other directly.
Well, it’s naturally a matter of give and take, even if there is no legal basis (which is likely the case, unless it’s a spa town or similar, or on a Sunday). Playing children have to be tolerated, end of story. However, mowing the lawn or using power tools on Sundays should be avoided, as it is unnecessary.
Sunday is a rest day. Therefore, you must not create noise that disturbs others. If your windows fully cover the noise, you can make some noise as long as it is not audible outside anymore.
Avoiding noise disturbance is the most important rule.
Vacuuming would also be prohibited if your vacuum cleaner is loud and your windows are open.
If you work on Sunday, you would have to tell your pastor during confession, but this does not concern the local authorities.
Paid construction or craftwork on Sundays is of course prohibited and would be considered illegal work unless you have an official exemption permit.
Sometimes there are neighbors who are already bothered just by the sight and then become extra sensitive to even the smallest sounds. This mainly happens with well-off older generations. Visual screening helps in such cases, even though you would be legally in the right.

We even did some excavation and compaction work on a Sunday and Monday (Reformation Day). It was possible because it’s a village, a new development area with only one occupied house and fields around. If it had been infill development with sensitive neighbors, I wouldn’t have done it. So, you can’t really generalize about that.
