Hello everyone,

We just bought a small house and are currently planning the renovation work that we want to carry out immediately after moving in.

We would like to retile the entrance area. The problem is that the staircase is built on top of the current tiles, and the area beneath the first steps is also tiled. Since I am not a tradesperson myself, I would appreciate your assessment.

I have already asked two professionals and received different opinions, so now I want to try to understand the issue myself.

1) Since the staircase was installed after the tiles, I assume that all heights were adjusted to the current tile height (there are no creaks and everything feels perfect). Replacing the tiles and a resulting minimal height difference compared to before would mean that the staircase would have to be readjusted, right? Am I correct to assume that this approach should be avoided?

2) Possible solution: Cut the existing tiles at the posts and simply tile around them. Here, I wonder if the small remaining piece of tile is sufficient to support the point load or if it would crumble after tiling (-> no idea how much a wooden staircase weighs and what the actual point load on the lower posts is).

3) Tile on tile is unfortunately not an option, as this would create a step edge towards the entrance door.

4) Are there any other options?

Thanks in advance!

Lift the staircase, remove the old tile, and install a new tile underneath. Please upload a picture of the situation.

We do not know how the base of the staircase was installed or possibly anchored at that time.
The suggestion from "hanghaus2000" seems to me the most reasonable and also the safest approach.
If the first stair step is supported from underneath (to prevent the staircase from settling in the worst case) and a small area of the surface right up to the screed is cleared, the structure can already be identified and further measures can be adjusted accordingly.
It seems more than just "probable" that the base of the staircase RESTS on the screed (with ceramic tiles).
Other options can be discussed once the current actual condition is known!

Thank you for the initial assessment. I will try to get a photo, but since we are not living there yet, it might take a few days.

From the way the responses read, it sounds like this would be a routine task for a tiler. In that case, it would probably make more sense not to even consider trying to do any work there myself, right?

Yes, that’s also how I see it. Especially since a proper and professional solution is always the better alternative compared to a "quick fix" ...

One should definitely know what they are doing. It’s not quite as simple as described. The staircase should remain stable both during and after the tile installation. 😉
