Hello everyone,

We have purchased a house from a developer and are currently working on the electrical planning. After reading quite a bit in the forum regarding video intercom systems, I still have one question.

Our electrician has offered to install a Cat 7 cable from the main distribution room in the basement to the front door or doorbell. In addition, two connection points for intercom stations are to be installed—one on the ground floor and one on the upper floor. (I assume this means two additional Cat 7 cables will be run to these points, but I am not sure.)

My question is: Would it be sufficient just to cable the doorbell to the main distribution room and then install the intercom stations wirelessly via radio or Wi-Fi somewhere in the house? Are there such options without using cloud-based services?

I am not entirely sure if this matters, but we have a motorized lock on the front door.

First of all, thanks for the feedback.

Regarding the LAN/WLAN topic, we have already given it some thought. We have planned a connection for an access point on each floor (basement, ground floor, upper floor, attic). We haven’t decided which system to use yet, but we still have about 9-10 months until we move in. So the Wi-Fi coverage should be stable.

Then maybe it’s already too late? Have you thought about the positioning of the access points (wall, ceiling), which ones with or without PoE, etc.? Please share your ideas. There are many here who can provide expert advice. 😎

Too late for what?

Basically, we have planned it as follows:
The utility room is in the basement with a patch panel and router. On the ground floor, we have planned a duplex outlet near the TV area, where the access point will also be connected (no POE). On the first floor, the access point with POE is planned in the hallway at the top end of the wall (ceiling mounting is not possible). Additionally, there is one more network outlet (simplex) in every room except the bathroom. In the attic, we have planned the access point with POE on the ceiling, plus two network outlets (simplex).

It is an end terrace house. The floor area per floor is about 50 m² (540 ft²). On the ground floor, there is a small hallway, guest toilet, kitchen, and living room (the latter is not separated by a wall). The first floor has two bedrooms plus one bathroom. The attic is a space with a significant slope. The exterior walls are solid (sand-lime brick), the interior walls are lightweight partitions.

The additional cost for 2 connections for the monitors / intercom stations is €280 plus VAT.
Do it! If it doesn’t work properly, it will really annoy you. You can definitely save those few euros elsewhere.
