Hello everyone,

We have purchased a house from a developer and are currently working on the electrical planning. After reading quite a bit in the forum regarding video intercom systems, I still have one question.

Our electrician has offered to install a Cat 7 cable from the main distribution room in the basement to the front door or doorbell. In addition, two connection points for intercom stations are to be installed—one on the ground floor and one on the upper floor. (I assume this means two additional Cat 7 cables will be run to these points, but I am not sure.)

My question is: Would it be sufficient just to cable the doorbell to the main distribution room and then install the intercom stations wirelessly via radio or Wi-Fi somewhere in the house? Are there such options without using cloud-based services?

I am not entirely sure if this matters, but we have a motorized lock on the front door.

Since TKS systems are still often proprietary nowadays, and practically every manufacturer has their own approach, it ultimately depends on what exactly you want to use. So if you know what is coming, we can also specify exactly what is needed.

I would definitely install a CAT cable. That already covers many options for you. Besides that, the remark from @Mycraft applies.

No, that is not enough. There are radio or Wi-Fi intercom units available, but for the latter your Wi-Fi coverage must be absolutely flawless, meaning really strong. Have you already considered the LAN/Wi-Fi setup, or is your approach more like "The router is somewhere in the utility room, so that should be fine"?

First of all, thank you for the feedback.

Regarding the LAN/WLAN topic, we have already given it some thought. We have planned a connection for an access point on each floor (basement, ground floor, upper floor, attic). We have not yet decided which system to use, but we still have about 9-10 months until moving in. Therefore, the Wi-Fi coverage should be stable.

Overall, it is naturally a matter of cost. The additional charge for two connections for the monitors / intercom units is 280 € plus VAT. After doing some further research, I believe I might be more flexible regarding the system choice and could possibly save 100 - 200 € this way.

If you still have a fixed-line phone, you can also use it as an intercom system with SIP setups. These doorbells are available, for example, from Akuvox.
