Why are the drawer slides on Malm dressers sometimes problematic?

Hello everyone, I have been using a MALM dresser from IKEA for a while and have noticed issues with the drawer slides on some of the drawers. The drawers don’t always glide smoothly, they can stick, or sometimes come off their tracks. I understand that there are metal or roller slides, but why do Malm models seem to have these slide issues so often? Are there any design weaknesses or material problems causing this? I would appreciate detailed experiences or technical explanations to better understand the issue.

Oh yes, I’m very familiar with this topic! My bottom drawer used to stick all the time, but after I completely removed the sliding rails and thoroughly cleaned them – wow, what a difference! :-)

Then I adjusted everything very precisely so the drawer would properly “lock” into place. Now everything runs really smoothly! Just taking the time for this is definitely worth it!

What are some common mistakes to watch out for?

Here are a few points from my perspective:

1. Guide rails not installed perfectly parallel.
2. Screws tightened too loosely or too tightly, causing material deformation.
3. Missing or incorrectly installed plastic clips or guide components.
4. Dust and debris in the rails preventing smooth sliding.

These mistakes lead to increased wear and problems with drawer movement.

Simply take the drawers out completely and check the slides. Usually, one of the rails is misaligned or dirty.

In many cases, careful adjustment or cleaning can fix the problem.

On the list: Guide rails not mounted exactly parallel and plastic clips missing.

Thank you for the detailed list! I did notice the plastic parts occasionally during assembly.

Are there specific replacement parts available for Malm if a clip is lost or broken? Or does the entire guide have to be replaced?

IKEA does offer replacement runners and accessories for the MALM series. Clips and small plastic components are usually only available as part of the runner sets. Individual clips can sometimes be difficult to find.

As an alternative, there are third-party suppliers with compatible drawer runners that tend to be more durable and able to carry heavier loads. Replacing the original with a higher-quality full-extension runner can significantly extend the lifespan and improve functionality.

However, this upgrade requires at least some DIY skills and may involve drilling new holes.
