Hello everyone, I recently noticed that some doors of my IKEA Billy bookcases no longer fit together properly. More specifically, the hinges sometimes cannot be mounted correctly, or the doors stick when closing. I am curious about what might cause the contact points, meaning the areas on the door and the cabinet frame, to no longer align properly. Could there be changes in the materials, manufacturing tolerances, or am I encountering a known issue? I would appreciate any experiences or explanations as to why the fitting of doors fails specifically with some Billy bookcase doors.
Let me summarize: Moisture, material deformation, and installation are the main reasons. Additionally, doors made by different manufacturers may not be 100% compatible, especially when replacing or purchasing additional units. It is important to check that everything fits securely and, if necessary, make adjustments.

This further affects the hinges and the fit. Therefore, it is worthwhile to carefully check the condition, not only regarding assembly but also the material quality.
If you want to be on the safe side, you should pay attention to the production date when purchasing replacement doors, even if this is not immediately noticeable. Small variations can occur with doors from different production years.

This is brilliant, how everyone is pitching in here! 😊 I had exactly the same problem once, so I completely removed the doors, let them dry overnight with the window open, and then readjusted everything – worked perfectly again!
Exactly, just try it out and don’t get frustrated – sometimes it’s not a big deal.
Good idea, I do that now too, my Billy thanks me! 😄

I just fiddled with the hinges a bit, screwed and wiggled them

I just leave the doors slightly open during hot weather

So be careful with retrofits!
Conclusion: Just readjust every now and then and maintain the door mechanism – that works best.
