I recently assembled several IKEA Billy bookcases—completely according to the instructions and using all the provided fasteners. However, the bookcases still wobble noticeably when I shake them or place light loads on the shelves. This surprises me because I would expect such furniture to be stable if assembled correctly. What do you think causes Billy bookcases to wobble despite proper assembly? Could it be due to the materials, the design itself, or the best way to secure them? What tips or experiences can you share to eliminate the wobbling for good?

Interesting question, as the Billy shelf has long been considered a symbol of affordable and sturdy shelving design.

In my opinion, people often put too much trust in the instructions. Proper assembly is essential, but these shelves are simply designed for flat and level surfaces—not for uneven floors. The material is thin MDF, so naturally, there is some loss of stability.

Additionally, this shelving system was originally designed for indoor use with minimal load. Over time, cross loads or uneven weight distribution cause wobbling.

All factors play a role. I sometimes provocatively say that you shouldn’t expect too much stability from budget furniture, no matter how carefully you assemble it. For securing the shelves, I recommend wall anchors, as without them these shelves are almost always vulnerable to wobbling.

Hey, great question! I think the Billy shelves are really practical and versatile, but yeah, if they wobble, it’s definitely not fun! 🙂

From my experience, the wobbling usually happens because the floor isn’t perfectly level or the small adjustable feet haven’t been set properly.

Or try this: have you ever tightened the wall fixings securely? That makes a huge difference! Once the shelf is firmly attached to the wall, it stands rock solid and won’t wobble anymore! <3

So don’t get discouraged, it’s easy to fix! And once your shelf is stable, it’s pure enjoyment :-)

I'll join in with a smile because Billy shelves definitely have their charm – even if they can be a bit tricky sometimes 😉

It’s true: even with careful assembly, slight variations can occur simply because materials like particleboard or MDF are never as rigid as solid wood.

But hey, a bit more warmth in the room and humidity can also affect this, as the material expands or contracts slightly.

That’s a good point. I see it like this: for the price, the shelf is really great, but that also means you have to accept some minor compromises.

The best thing is to carefully adjust the leveling feet, and if possible, attach the shelf to the wall. That gives the whole thing a steady anchor ❤
