Alessadeo14 Mar 2018 09:37I recently ordered an IKEA Brimnes bedroom set and was initially surprised at how difficult some of the components were to assemble. I’m really curious why certain parts of this model are particularly challenging to put together.
The instructions themselves are clear, but especially with the drawers and the longer side panels, I felt the fit wasn’t quite precise – at times, I had to apply a lot of force or try repeatedly before the parts finally aligned properly.
Are there known design issues or manufacturing tolerances that cause the components not to fit together easily? And does anyone have tips on how to avoid these challenges without damaging the furniture or screws?
I would appreciate hearing about your experiences and insights regarding the difficulties when assembling IKEA Brimnes components!

Sometimes I had to use a lot of force or try fitting the parts several times before they finally fit properly.I know that feeling all too well! 😅 IKEA furniture can sometimes be really challenging—especially when parts, like with Brimnes, don’t fit together perfectly. I think it often comes down to slight manufacturing tolerances combined with the choice of materials—MDF boards or particleboard can expand or shrink a bit depending on the season.
Also, if a screw is even slightly off position, it can create stress that makes assembly harder. So the best approach is to check everything step by step, loosely assemble the screws, and only tighten them fully at the end.
A little tip from me: patience and sometimes warm hands help—the wood relaxes a bit that way 😉

Are there any known construction issues or manufacturing tolerances that make it difficult for the components to fit together smoothly?I can provide a detailed answer here, as I have assembled Brimnes components several times. In fact, there are several technical reasons:
- First: manufacturing tolerances. Although IKEA follows very standardized processes, especially the MDF parts produced at low cost can vary in thickness and shape. For example, if a side panel is slightly thicker than the groove, fitting the pieces together becomes difficult and requires force.
- Second: assembly method. Brimnes often uses dowels and Minifix screws, which require precision. If a screw is tightened too early, it can slightly pull the parts out of alignment.
- Third: the instructions are clear but not perfect. Some joints are difficult to identify when holes are slightly misaligned or when screws are not inserted completely straight.
- Fourth: material behavior. MDF reacts to moisture. Especially with older or damp packaging, parts can swell easily.
Therefore, my advice:
- Check all parts carefully and note if anything is warped.
- Screw in all fasteners loosely at first.
- Use plastic hammers and guides to ensure precise fitting.
What exactly did the problematic components look like in your case? Were they large side panels or smaller connecting pieces? If you provide more details, I can offer more targeted help.

Screws should be initially inserted loosely. This is the key. First, loosely assemble everything, align it, then tighten.
It also often helps to slightly shift the parts against each other beforehand to avoid stress.

A small tip from me: a bit of patience and sometimes warm hands – that relaxes the wood a little 😉I can only agree with that. Especially when assembling this furniture for the first time, frustration is almost guaranteed. For me personally, it helps to approach problem areas calmly and not give up right away, even if it’s difficult.
Often, it’s small adjustments that make the difference, and when you see everything fitting together perfectly, it feels even better.
Also, I think sharing tips like this in the forum is really valuable – thanks to everyone who openly shares their experiences!
