Hello everyone,

The topic of heating is very relevant for us right now, and I’m getting a bit frustrated. The contractors seem to have little experience and mostly just sell the top sellers of their own brands. For that, they charge about an 80% markup plus installation fees. What I really want to know is… who buys the equipment online? So far, I haven’t found a single heating professional who will install units that weren’t purchased from them. I suspect that heating contractors get their equipment directly from the manufacturer or wholesaler. But if there are some shops online, there must be a market for it.

As I said, I’m just curious. Of course, some people might install their heating systems themselves, but that can’t be very common.

so long, ck

If you ask the heating installer whether they also install third-party components, the answer is usually clear.

You will have an easier time if you hire the heating installer (HI) only to carry out your finished plans, removing them from the risk associated with the heat pump. However, if the heat pump is expensive or complex, I would not recommend doing this.

This is how we implemented it, maybe it could work for you:
The compact unit (Panasonic 5kW, 3,000€ (approx. $3,300)) was purchased as a DIY project and placed outside at its location. The heating installer built the relatively simple hydraulics and underfloor heating according to my plans (from the internet, separate underfloor heating planner). As a courtesy, they also connected the two water-carrying pipes from the house to my heat pump and filled the system with water. Those were the heating installer’s only points of contact with the heat pump. Our electrician connected 3-4 cables according to the instructions. Done.

Our heat pump is not offered by the traditional heating installers. If there are any issues with the heat pump itself, I have no contact person except the manufacturer’s nationwide emergency service. If repair costs exceed 1,000€ (approx. $1,100), I plan to buy a new heat pump. For emergencies, I have two fan heaters and an electric immersion heater with a standard plug in the domestic hot water tank.

Do you also buy your oil from a discount store and take it to the workshop for your car’s oil change? I don’t think (hope) you do not. The workshop wants to sell its own oil, and it seems to be the same with your heating system...

I have the pump as well. But I built and connected everything myself. It’s not rocket science if you take some time to learn and aren’t completely inexperienced.

At the authorized dealer (for example, VW), some people do this. After all, you don’t buy oil at a discount store, but branded oil is significantly cheaper in the open market than what the official workshop charges for it.

Personally, I would have you hand it over. You don’t take your pork chop to the butcher to have it deboned either... But to each their own.
