ᐅ Who installs district heating systems?

Hello everyone,

The topic of heating is very relevant for us right now, and I’m getting a bit frustrated. The contractors seem to have little experience and mostly just sell the top sellers of their own brands. For that, they charge about an 80% markup plus installation fees. What I really want to know is… who buys the equipment online? So far, I haven’t found a single heating professional who will install units that weren’t purchased from them. I suspect that heating contractors get their equipment directly from the manufacturer or wholesaler. But if there are some shops online, there must be a market for it.

As I said, I’m just curious. Of course, some people might install their heating systems themselves, but that can’t be very common.

so long, ck

Hello Christian,
I think it depends on how new the house is: in our current 1952 house, my husband and father-in-law installed a new radiator together. It was a nerve-wracking, hours-long job because the connections didn’t fit properly, etc.
Advantage: A cheap 100€ for a Buderus radiator bought online. It would have been quite expensive with a professional.
Disadvantage: Nerve-racking 🙂

I can understand why craftsmen do not want to play the role of "strikebreakers" for online shops that only sell products without providing customers with suitable installation partners.

Consumers who think it is "smart" to simply put together the cheapest components need to learn that this does not result in well-functioning systems. By the way, the economy works similarly: if I, as a customer, do not pay the craftsman, he turns to the unemployment office, and then I end up paying him as a taxpayer. Then the wholesaler loses out, and bureaucracy steps in. Is that really cheaper?

Still don’t understand? It’s not about installing the cheapest component but the exact same product/material.

If the tradesperson receives fair compensation for their work, then everything is fine. Unfortunately, sometimes extreme value creation occurs between equity / retail price and the consumer. And just because it has always been that way doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. Since the internet exists, value creation has become much more transparent.

To return to the oil example: I can get Castrol with the required manufacturer quality standard for €6.5 per liter (about $7) whereas the workshop wants to charge €30–35 per liter for the "same" oil from the barrel.

Our workshop does not charge extra if you bring your own oil (it is simply noted in the service booklet).

There are online shops where you can also book the installation service, both for air conditioning and heating systems, etc. I’m not sure if it’s cheaper, but at least the material cost comes directly from the online shop.

I would install it myself too. It’s not rocket science. You can use the money you save for a vacation 😉

No need to worry about the poor tradespeople. They still earn enough anyway... for now :P

For emergencies, I have 2 fan heaters and a heating element with a Schuko plug installed in the hot water tank.

Which type of hot water tank do you use? I am looking for a hot water tank that allows the connection of a heating element.
