I recently assembled a Billy cabinet from IKEA and came across the topic of screw types. My main question is: which type of screw is best suited for the BILLY to ensure a stable, secure, and long-lasting connection? I have read that some screws are better for the wood material itself, while others are more suitable for connecting with dowels or cam connectors. I would appreciate hearing which screws you prefer – considering factors such as material, length, diameter, and drive type – and if you have any special tips to prevent stripping or pullout. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Chipboard screws, 4x40 mm (approximately 0.16x1.57 inches), are standard for BILLY. Pre-drilling is recommended to prevent splitting. Galvanized screws help protect against rust.

I would like to add that for BILLY, the use of slotted, Phillips, or Torx drives is quite important. Torx screws often provide better grip with cordless screwdrivers and reduce the risk of over-tightening. Especially if you plan to assemble and disassemble the cabinet frequently, investing in Torx screws is worthwhile.

Regarding the material: zinc-coated screws are acceptable if the cabinet is used indoors, while stainless steel is recommended for more humid environments. Also, avoid countersinking the screws too deeply to prevent unsightly dents.

If you like, I can also suggest some sources, as there can be significant differences in quality.

Wow, so many helpful tips here! It really shows how much work and care goes into furniture assembly! 🙂 I’m also fully convinced by the Torx screws for BILLY – they grip really well and give you great control. Plus, it’s just fun when everything fits perfectly! If you want it a bit more stable, you can also try screws with plastic washers, as they distribute the load very well. Good luck to everyone with your screwing! ;-)

Absolutely right, I completely agree. Especially when it comes to durability, it’s worth considering options beyond the standard ones.

That’s an excellent tip, especially for thinner chipboard panels like those used in BILLY. This way, you prevent the screw head from cutting into the material.

A quick note on the material in general: stainless steel is more durable and resists rust, but it can be more expensive and sometimes a bit harder to drive in. However, if your BILLY is placed in more humid areas, I would recommend stainless steel.

editnon, do you have a specific application or location for the cabinet? That would help in recommending the perfect screw.
