Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble some Billy shelves from Ikea soon and am wondering which tools are particularly helpful to work efficiently and minimize mistakes.

I understand that a screwdriver is necessary, but are there any specific or recommended tools that can significantly simplify the process?

For example, I have heard that a cordless drill is very useful, but which type would you recommend? Is it also necessary to pre-drill holes before screwing? Are there any tips or tricks where certain tools make a task easier?

I would appreciate your experiences, recommendations, and possibly any advice on common problems that can occur when using the wrong tools.

A cordless screwdriver with a Phillips bit is the most important tool. Clamps are useful but not essential.

You don’t need to pre-drill, as the holes are already there. A hammer is only needed for the wall plugs.

I’m also curious about which surface you use during assembly. The choice of surface affects both the feel of the tools and the final result.

Soft surfaces like carpets or blankets prevent potential scratches but are less suitable if you want to work precisely and straight. Harder surfaces such as a workbench or a sturdy table help with grip and controlled screwing. This is especially helpful when using a cordless screwdriver, as it prevents the tool from slipping or being inserted at an angle.

Regarding the tools themselves: I recommend keeping a set of various bits on hand in case the screws or anchors require special sizes. Small clamps or screw clamps make securing parts much easier. This is especially valuable when assembling the back panels, which often need to be tensioned.

A small additional tip: a utility knife is very useful for installing the back panel to gently remove protective film or packaging material.

I would like to take this a step further and emphasize the importance of the correct approach when working with tools.

Although a cordless drill is generally the most recommended tool for assembling the Billy shelves, it’s important to remember that Ikea’s assembly instructions often suggest starting screws by hand. This allows you to align the parts precisely before fully securing everything.

I also strongly recommend tightening screws only until the parts are firmly connected, but never driving them in completely at once. It’s better to tighten screws gradually over several passes. This not only protects the materials but also prevents the screws from binding.

Additionally, using a protractor or angle gauge to check angles can help avoid assembling the shelf crookedly. This is especially important for larger shelves.

Moving on to another point: use a rubber mallet instead of a regular hammer for dowels and small wood pieces—a regular hammer can easily cause dents.

Finally, good lighting at the workspace helps to avoid mistakes. While this isn’t a tool in the traditional sense, I wanted to mention it here.

I think it’s important to point out, along with all the tips, that you shouldn’t stress yourself out. Assembling Billy shelves may sound simple to many, but it can quickly become frustrating if you use the wrong tools or approach the task poorly.

I want to support this because I have personally experienced how important the feel is when tightening screws.

So, if the battery is running low or you’re unsure, it’s better to use a regular screwdriver to avoid damaging the material.

And if something goes wrong—don’t panic! We’re happy to help with any questions, that’s what these forums are for 🙂
