Enrique4112 Nov 2022 08:37Hello everyone,
I have a question that has been on my mind for some time: Which spare parts are most commonly needed for Malm furniture when it comes to repairs or replacements? I am particularly interested in whether there are specific wear parts that are required more frequently than others, and which components are best to keep in stock as a precaution if you regularly use or sell this type of furniture. Perhaps you can also share tips on how to best resolve or prevent common issues with Malm using appropriate replacement parts.
Thanks in advance for your detailed answers!

Hello Enrique41,
to answer your question specifically: MALM furniture is known for its simple design, but certain replacement parts are indeed more common. The most frequently needed are:
1. Drawer slides: These are often made of metal running inside plastic tracks, which wear out over time. A new set is inexpensive and can significantly extend the lifespan.
2. Screws and dowels: Typical furniture fasteners can loosen with frequent use or improper assembly. It’s advisable to have screw sets and matching wood or metal dowels on hand.
3. Moldings or trims for covering: Surfaces often get damaged or parts break off, especially in heavily used areas.
4. Feet or floor protectors: The plastic feet wear down quickly and affect both stability and floor protection.
Tips:
- Remove drawers gently and avoid overloading them.
- When assembling, tighten screws firmly but avoid overtightening.
This should give you a good overview of the replacement parts you are most likely to encounter.

What also annoys me is that some screws lose their grip over time, causing everything to become loose. That’s why I’ve learned to regularly check the furniture and fix minor issues early before they get worse.
I think especially here in the forum we can help each other handle these everyday repairs better – it saves a lot of frustration and money :-)

But I always wonder if manufacturers could do better instead of producing cheaply on a tight budget. Replacement parts like drawer slides, which need frequent changing, clearly point to a design and durability flaw.
On the positive side, there are several suppliers offering better alternatives, so upgrading is definitely an option—perhaps even with metal slides that are more robust. As for IKEA itself? Well, they focus on volume and price rather than longevity.

Keatondra14 Nov 2022 17:56Hello Enrique41 and everyone,
to provide a more detailed overview: As mentioned before, drawer slides are the most common replacement parts for MALM furniture, as they tend to wear out with daily use. It’s worth checking whether the slides are made of plastic or metal – metal slides usually last longer.
Additionally, the connecting fittings, especially cam locks or clip connectors, are frequently affected. They ensure stability but can become loose or break after repeated assembly and disassembly. For those who often rearrange or frequently reassemble their furniture, I strongly recommend keeping a repair kit with the appropriate connectors on hand.
Furthermore, the material of the back panels in MALM furniture is often thin, which can lead to damage under load or exposure to moisture. Replacement back panels can help maintain stability.
One more tip: For stability and durability, always use original parts or high-quality equivalent replacements. Homemade fixes often cause new problems.
If you need specific sources for replacement parts, I’d be happy to recommend reliable and affordable options.
