Hello

we are currently building our new house.
We had the first appointment with the electrician, and for the smart home system, he recommended Free@home.

The electrician does not offer KNX.

What would you recommend? Should we go with Free@home or install a wireless smart home system ourselves later?

We prefer to install more double gang boxes rather than run 4 ports in a single location.

That's basically the same thing.

The only devices that need PoE are the APs on each floor and possibly the small switches in the room.

Then no PoE at all and not worry about it anymore.

No devices requiring PoE would be connected to the small PoE switch in the rooms.

There is usually power nearby, right? I would just use a cheap basic switch there. Unlike the access point, you can hide the switch somewhere as long as it doesn’t overheat.

Since none of the devices you mentioned require PoE, I don’t understand your point. Are you suggesting producing more electronic waste by distributing as many small switches as possible throughout the house?

One LAN cable to these devices is enough, connected to a 5-port switch that is powered on only when the devices are on.
Having 4 or even 5 LAN outlets and a 24- or even 48-port switch in the home automation room (HAR) seems completely excessive to me.

For these devices, energy consumption over their lifetime drives the cost, not the purchase price...

Why no PoE at all?
I would also go for a wall-mounted access point with an integrated switch, so basically no separate switch would be needed anymore (I can’t really imagine needing that many LAN ports, it’s just for possible future expansion).

Yes, there is power near the LAN ports.
The switch and access point would then occupy two power outlets (which is quite a lot).

Well, or you could use a power strip, like people on a budget 😉

Always consider the follow-up costs. The best kWh is the one you never consume... then you also need less kWp on the roof...

Photovoltaics will get interesting anyway; at some point, we’ll reach a situation in summer where all the solar systems can’t feed energy back to the grid because the electricity just isn’t needed...

And then?

@xMisterDx could you please explain in detail what you would recommend, especially with regard to electricity consumption?
