Hello

we are currently building our new house.
We had the first appointment with the electrician, and for the smart home system, he recommended Free@home.

The electrician does not offer KNX.

What would you recommend? Should we go with Free@home or install a wireless smart home system ourselves later?

Yes, we’re talking about a 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) semi-detached house on 3 floors plus a basement.

I also think that one access point per floor will be sufficient, even if it’s not installed in an ideal location.

Unfortunately, I need to ask again what advantages a PoE access point system (e.g., UniFi) offers compared to something like AVM.
What are the benefits of centralized management?
What features does UniFi have that AVM does not?
If I understand which additional features UniFi offers, I can better decide whether I need them or not.

I haven’t found a direct comparison between UniFi and AVM.

Regarding smart home, I will wait for the next discussion with the electrician before looking into it further.

Poe does not require a power outlet. Managed can handle, for example, VLANs.

I think AVM is a perfectly fine option. I mainly chose Unifi because of Power over Ethernet (PoE), as I wanted the access point installed on the ceiling. For me, an access point should be either on the ceiling or mounted high on a wall to avoid interference from furniture or other devices.

Unifi offers more configuration options than AVM, but most people don’t need these. Most of the people I know find AVM’s setup complicated enough, and Unifi’s setup completely overwhelming. There is also a smartphone app for setting up Unifi, but I uninstalled it immediately after the first test. I run the Unifi Controller 24/7 on a Raspberry Pi that also runs Pi-hole. However, you can also run the controller on a local computer and only start it when you want to make changes. It’s important to know that you can’t simply switch to another computer. You always have to create a backup of the settings and restore it on the other computer first.

That will be the speed of your internet connection. However, there are also situations where higher speeds within the local network are beneficial, especially if the laptop is only connected via Wi-Fi.

Here, it would again be helpful to know the original poster’s requirements. For example, is a network-attached storage device being used? Will anything be streamed over it?

We will be getting a 500 Mbit fiber optic connection.

Setting up a Fritzbox or, for example, a standard Vodafone router is not a problem.
Opening certain ports is also not an issue (I have done this so far).

Can someone tell me how to secure my network or individual devices, for example for IPTV (is VLAN used for this)?
