Hello
we are currently building our new house.
We had the first appointment with the electrician, and for the smart home system, he recommended Free@home.
The electrician does not offer KNX.
What would you recommend? Should we go with Free@home or install a wireless smart home system ourselves later?

I would definitely recommend a "wired" system for a new build.
F@H can be configured quite well by yourself; you just need to use actuators and sensors from Busch-Jaeger. Especially with the sensors, the range of functions seems limited compared to what is available for KNX.
Are you familiar with the book by Stefan Heinle on home automation? It was very helpful to me.

It has been asked and answered many times online.
Of course, the answers vary a lot because everyone has different expectations.
Your expectations for a “smart” home seem rather low to me.
So free@home might be an option.
Personally, I would never rely on a single provider for something like this. I would either follow a standard or stick to traditional electrical installations. Maybe add a simple blind control system and that’s it. Lighting could be handled through Hue, and that would be enough.
Just having a smart home to tell friends about, but in the end only being able to control blinds, wouldn’t be worth it for me.
Oh, good point.
If no new information has come up since then, I would still advise against it and recommend only installing blind controls and possibly Hue lighting.
That’s all.

I still haven’t figured out what Free@Home does better compared to a radio-based smart home system.
Can someone explain this to me?The common disadvantages of radio systems are quite easy to identify. These include:- Range may be insufficient
- More prone to interference
- Security risks
- Sometimes requires batteries (costs and time for replacement)
- Radio standards can change over time
- …
Whether these points apply to your smart home or are relevant to you, or if the advantages outweigh them, is something only you can decide.
