Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Ikea Brimnes furniture and now I’m wondering which screws are best for assembly. It is important to me that the screws not only provide a strong connection but also hold well in the pre-drilled holes without damaging the wood or loosening over time.

Has anyone had experience with alternative screws to those supplied? What material type, size, and thread type would you recommend if the furniture might need to be disassembled later without causing too much wear to the material?

I look forward to your expertise and tips!

Hello liguklo,

Basically, the screws supplied by Ikea are tailored to the furniture: they are usually chipboard screws with coarse threads. For Brimnes furniture, these are typically 4 mm thick, about 50 mm (2 inches) long screws with sharp threads designed to grip well into MDF or particleboard.

If you are considering alternatives, I would recommend sticking with zinc-plated steel chipboard screws. They are less prone to corrosion and have the appropriate thread profile. Stainless steel can also be an option if you want long-lasting durability.

Make sure to use screws with countersunk heads so they sit flush with the wood surface. If possible, opt for Torx drives, which allow better torque and reduce damage to the wood when tightening.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I would like to address liguklo’s question in a more structured way: “Which screws are best suited for Ikea Brimnes furniture?”

- Material: Galvanized steel or stainless steel, the latter offering better corrosion resistance
- Size: Usually 4-5 mm diameter, 40-50 mm length, depending on the component
- Thread type: Chipboard screws with coarse threads to ensure good grip in MDF or particleboard
- Head type: Countersunk head to sit flush
- Drive type: Torx or Phillips; Torx has clear advantages in terms of required torque

It is also important to screw in slowly and carefully to avoid damaging the material.

Common mistakes include:
- Choosing screws that are too long or too short
- Using the wrong thread type that doesn’t grip the wood properly
- Screwing in too quickly and damaging the material

Finally, a tip: if you plan to disassemble the furniture frequently, it’s worth using insert nuts or connector screws.

For Ikea Brimnes, original chipboard screws are best. 4mm x 50mm (approx. 3/16 inch x 2 inches), galvanized. Stainless steel screws only for humid rooms.

I can only agree with that.

I would add that for Brimnes furniture, due to the material type (MDF and particleboard), screws with a specialized particleboard thread hold much better than regular wood screws. In addition, it’s important to use high-quality materials to prevent premature rust or corrosion.

If you want to replace screws, make sure to choose the exact right length: screws that are too short provide poor holding power, while screws that are too long can damage the back of the furniture panels.

Chipboard screws with a 4mm diameter and 50mm (2 inches) length are standard for Brimnes. Zinc plating is sufficient. Always use countersunk heads!
