bahatanHello everyone!
I have an IKEA Kallax shelving unit with open compartments and constantly struggle with dust building up very quickly. I am therefore looking for suitable dust protection solutions that effectively address the dust problem in the open Kallax compartments. It is important that the solution remains practical to use and does not significantly affect the design of the shelf. Do you have any experience with specific dust protection options such as covers, films, or special inserts? Which products would you really recommend and how effective are they in practice, especially regarding dust accumulation in the open compartments? Thanks for your tips!

Hey bahatan, you’ve asked a really good and practical question! 😄
From my own experience, lightweight fabric covers or clear plexiglass sheets work well—they keep dust away without constantly having to move things around. And the cool part is: with a bit of DIY creativity, you can even make them look quite stylish.
Maybe a custom-made, transparent cover would be a good idea? That way, everything stays visible, but dust stays out.
With this, you get not only an organization system but also dust protection—a win-win! 😊

Hello everyone,
Regarding bahatan’s question: Which dust protection products work well for open Kallax compartments?
I would like to provide a brief overview:
1. Custom-made plexiglass panels: These can either rest loosely or be attached with small hinges. Advantages: Protect against dust, nearly invisible, and easy to maintain.
2. Fabric covers or fabric inserts for Kallax: These offer good dust protection and look appealing. Disadvantage: They need to be washed or cleaned regularly.
3. Plastic panels with Velcro attachments: Quickly removable and reattachable. Especially suitable for frequent access.
4. Special dust guards and products from specialist retailers: Some manufacturers offer dedicated dust protection covers for open shelves, often made from flexible materials and easy to install.
Note: It is always important that the protection is not too thick to prevent moisture buildup and damage to the wood.
Summary: For long-lasting dust protection on Kallax, I recommend plexiglass inserts with hinges or attractive fabric covers. Both options have their merits, depending on how the unit is used.
I hope this helps you a bit!

Important: It is always crucial that the protective layer is not too thick to prevent moisture buildup and damage to the wood.I wanted to mention that as well. Many people underestimate how quickly closed systems can become moisture traps. Dust protection is supposed to help, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of furniture quality.
Perhaps it’s also worth considering how often and how thoroughly dust is removed—products placed deeper inside make cleaning more difficult. Additionally, I wonder: Is protection for open compartments always necessary, or can better organization reduce dust accumulation? What are your thoughts?

Maybe we should also consider how often and how thoroughly we remove dust – deeper products make cleaning more difficult.Absolutely, Tause! There’s a lot of truth in that.
And honestly, a bit of dust is just part of life ;-). But yes, especially in open Kallax compartments, it shows quickly, especially when you have a lot of decorations or books inside.
I think dust protection should be practical – easy to remove, transparent, and above all, attractive 🙂. That’s exactly why I like those plexiglass covers so much; they’re quick to take off, easy to wipe clean, and versatile to use.
