Hello everyone, I’m currently exploring DIY furniture building and have come across the IKEA Hemnes range. I’m especially interested in which DIY projects, based on your experience, work particularly well with the versatile Hemnes pieces. I’m not only thinking about simple enhancements like painting or changing handles but also creative redesigns, combining them with other materials, or functional extensions. Perhaps you have examples from your own experience or recommendations for projects that can be done with minimal tools and basic DIY skills, yet still provide significant added value in everyday life? I’m looking forward to your tips and ideas!

IKEA furniture is generally not designed for extensive modifications, as the MDF and particleboard materials often have limitations. That is true, but many creative modifications are possible with the right techniques, especially if moisture is avoided.

I currently have a Hemnes dresser with 8 drawers and a Hemnes sideboard in white. Perfect, both provide a good base. Here are my suggestions:
- Hemnes dresser: Upgrade by replacing the handles with leather or metal alternatives, combined with a wooden top as a surface
- Sideboard: Use the top as a low media console, cover the back panel with fabric for cable management
Tools: Cordless screwdriver, sandpaper, drill – no large machines needed.

I converted a Hemnes dresser into a shoe bench by simply adding a foam cushion as a seat and slightly raising the legs. Good idea! Here’s a tip: If you want to secure the foam cushion, you can use either Velcro strips or upholster the foam with fabric and attach it with a staple gun. This prevents slipping and gives a more professional appearance.
Also, non-slip felt pads under the legs are recommended to protect the floor, especially on smooth surfaces.
