Hello everyone,

I’m considering getting new Billy shelves from IKEA and I’m wondering which models are equally suitable for both an office and a living room.

It’s important to me that the shelves provide enough storage space for work documents, folders, and technical equipment, while also fitting visually into the living room without looking purely functional or overly office-like.

Does anyone have good knowledge of the different Billy models and can recommend which versions work well for this kind of dual use? Maybe also some tips on combinations with doors, shelves, or accessories?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and insights!

If you want to use the shelf as a room divider in an open space, a freestanding model that can be accessed from both sides can be very practical.

That’s an interesting idea! I actually have an open living/work area, so this option could make a lot of sense.

Is there any experience with the stability of freestanding BILLY shelves? I’m wondering if they stand securely on their own or if special fastenings are still needed.

The freestanding shelves from the BILLY series are generally stable, but when used as room dividers, it is recommended to secure them to a wall. This increases safety, especially if there are children or pets in the household.

You can also improve stability by using base plates or standing feet. These accessories are available from IKEA.

Another option is to equip the shelf with suitable back panels, which often provide additional stability.

The model with a height of 80x202 cm (31x79 inches) offers sufficient storage space without appearing overwhelming.

I agree with that. Additionally, the taller version allows for more practical shelf levels, which is especially important in an office setting to keep different materials organized separately.

For the living room, I recommend closing the lower compartments with doors. This creates a calm appearance and hides clutter, while the open shelves above can be used for decorative items or books.

Minimalist handles or handleless doors complete the look and make the shelving unit feel more homely.
